Beaver Lake Cree Nation - Tar Sands Trial - Big News
This is huge! Beaver Lake Cree Nation has launched a bold and brilliant legal move that stands to change the game in Canada’s tar sands. The Nation has asked the court to award them a portion of trial costs in advance, the same strategy that made it possible for the Tsilhqot’in to take their title case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. Says Karey Brooks, legal counsel for the Beaver Lake Cree: “It’s been really difficult to get momentum. Now, if the Crown has to contribute to funding the litigation, they’re going to want to find the most efficient and quickest way possible. Right now, the incentive is the other way.”
Media from coast to coast was abuzz with the news, including a story in the Edmonton Journal that mentions RAVEN’s contribution to the case over the years. We’re incredibly proud of our donor community who has been faithfully following and donating to the Tar Sands Trial case all these years. In the past month alone donors like you have given $42,000 to the Beaver Lake Cree Nation case. Much gratitude to our friends from The Leap who spread the word to their networks and helped us raise half of that sum!

Pull Together - Let’s STOP the Kinder Morgan Pipeline Expansion NOW!
On April 8th, Kinder Morgan announced it was suspending new investment on the Trans Mountain pipeline and tankers project. It’s no coincidence that this announcement came the day after they were faced down by Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, Chief Bob Chamberlin, and Chief Judy Wilson of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs. We know Indigenous legal challenges are a key reason why the company is spooked; Kinder Morgan’s CEO said that if the company cannot reach agreement with B.C. and other stakeholders by May 31, they'll cancel the project altogether.
May 31 is fast approaching. Please go to www.CoastProtectors.ca to learn more, and to know where to show up for Indigenous land and water protectors. And you can Donate or fundraise for the Pull Together campaign here. Let’s stop this pipeline once and for all!!!

The essay competition is open to ALL DISCIPLINES in the social sciences and humanities. Papers from all methodological and theoretical standpoints will be considered. The award is open to ALL MASTER'S and MSC Students enrolled full-time at a Canadian University.
Preference will be given to Indigenous students, but students from all racial and ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. We also encourage all applicants to position themselves in relation to the issues and topics they address in their papers.

Our huge thanks go out to RAVEN fundraisers!!
Aiyana and Jackie of Bandidas Taqueria have done it again. They’ve beat their own fundraiser best!! On Earth Day they opened up their restaurant and sidewalk to an event that raised more funds for the Heiltsuk Campaign than any of their previous fundraisers. The Solidarity Notes Labour Choir came out to sing in the streets, along with an a capella quartet, a guitarist and a fiddler. We are so grateful to all of these Bandidas and to Earnest Ice Cream who scooped out ice cream delights on this sunny Earth Day, all in support of the Heiltsuk Nation.
National Indigenous People’s Day - June 21st
While we’ve got your attention - mark your calendars! On National Indigenous People’s Day Bandidas Taqueria is once again hosting a fundraiser for the Heiltsuk!! They will have art by Heiltsuk youth on display, possibly a silent auction and a raffle, definitely an invitation to customers to donate directly, and absolutely Bandidas Taqueria will donate 100% of their profits for the day!! We hope to see you there! BT is at 2781 Commercial Drive in Vancouver.
With thanks for all you are doing for Indigenous rights and environmental protection,
Jan, Ana, Andrea, Sue, Laurie, Leah & Michelle
