Dear Friend,
I hope this message finds you safe and healthy. Thank you for your ongoing support of the Council of Canadians.
It’s almost unbelievable: 12 months ago, we would have never imagined the world as we now see it — shaken to its core by a global pandemic causing upheaval and unrest across the country and around the world.
Let’s imagine the world as it can be 12 months from now. I believe your support of the Council of Canadians can help to shape that future.
We saw how in the throes of the pandemic, our movement got to work addressing the most urgent needs of people and communities across the country. As just one example: We pushed for an end to for-profit long-term care homes after they proved to be the worst offenders in the COVID-19 crisis. We met with the Minister of Health’s office, and called for national standards, removing the profit motive from care and supported workers in calling for the resources they have been demanding for years.
This year, we will face many of the same urgent issues as last year, but we will face them together.
In 2021, we plan to challenge the most powerful corporations on the planet and protect people, the planet and our democracy.
We’ll do this by asking the federal government to enact a Canadian Water Agency so we can finally ensure water is fully realized as a human right and push back against underfunding of local water systems.
We’re going to establish more Green New Deal communities in the face of growing pressure to privatize transit and subsidize fossil fuels.
We’re going to continue to call to expand our public health care system from profiteering by embracing pharmacare and ending corporate ownership of long-term care. I’m asking you to put your trust in us and this agenda. Will you join thousands of grassroots supporters in our movement by becoming a member through either a one-time contribution or a renewing monthly donation. Become a Member Your support and the collective support of tens of thousands of donors is what makes the Council of Canadians unique. Unlike many charities and non-profits, over 92 per cent of the Council’s funding comes from individual donors like you. This means we remain staunchly independent as we challenge the most powerful corporations on the planet.
This year, like last year, will have its challenges. But I am confident that by working together, we can make real change.
