Practicing System Change, Making Connections, Building a Movement

Dear Climate Rebels, --- PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY ---
Registration form and overview schedule now online! Housing information will be up soon.

University of California, Santa Barbara, Oct. 9-11, 2015

Our global community is experiencing unprecedented climate destabilization. With the heat index in Iran rising to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, wild fires torching California and Washington State, rampant and ever-increasing ocean acidification and air pollution, we must address our current ecological crisis and the nature of its systemic inequalities. As world leaders and the corporate elite that stands behind many of them gear up for the climate negotiations in Paris in December, West Coast climate activists are gathering next weekend with radical system change as the only viable solution to our climate crisis in mind.

Join us on October 9-11, 2015, at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for a gathering on “21st Century Ecosocialism: Practicing System Change, Making Connections, Building a Movement,” to discuss what it means to change the system, renew old friendships and make new connections, and work towards building a climate justice movement that unapologetically confronts capitalism.

Confirmed speakers include Chris Williams, author of Ecology and Socialism; Kshama Sawant, Seattle City Council member (via skype); David Klein, director of the Climate Science Program at CSU Northridge; Jeremy Brecher, labor and social movement historian and author (via skype), Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org (via skype); Ragina Johnson, Native American ecosocialist activist and writer; and Jill Stein, Green Party presidential candidate (via skype).

If you plan to attend, please register so we have an idea how many to expect. Registration is free. If you are attending, please print out the schedule beforehand or have it available on your computer or phone. We will only be distributing one-page information sheets at the event. The gathering is an unfunded, free event, so we will also not be providing any food or drink, but there are convenient places to buy food and drink nearby, and we will have information on options on the website soon.

Although the formal opening of the gathering is Saturday morning, don't miss Friday evening's event if you can possibly make it. This is the premiere of a rough cut of a film by UCSB sociologist Richard Widick, "Climate Deadline: Paris 2015", followed by a discussion with the director and producer and a reception. The event is free, but a reservation is recommended to guarantee a seat.
