Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow is in Vienna, Austria today to speak against the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

Shortly after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named his cabinet on Nov. 4, Council of Canadians campaigners wrote his key ministers on issues... of top concern to us.

Council calls on Trudeau to implement national enforceable drinking water standards
In March, the Council of Canadians released a paper titled On Notice for a Drinking Water Crisis. The paper highlights that as of January there were 1,838 drinking water advisories in effect across this country and that with tar sands expansion, pipelines, mining, fracking, bottled water plants, climate change and agricultural run-off, we can expect even more advisories.

NEB chair says it's business as usual with pipeline reviews, for now

In his mandate letter to natural resources minister James Carr, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau writes that he expects "Work with the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs to immediately review Canada’s environmental assessment processes to regain public trust and introduce new, fair processes..."

Trudeau directs his trade minister to "implement" CETA

In his 'mandate letter' to Trade minister Chrystia Freeland, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau states his top priorities: "Develop strategies to implement the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and consult on Canada’s potential participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)..."

Centre Wellington chapter hosts successful screening of This Changes Everything

The Council of Canadians Centre Wellington chapter had a successful screening of This Changes Everything in Elora, Ontario this past Friday (Nov. 13).

Oshawa calls on Trudeau to reject ethanol refinery on Lake Ontario waterfront

Oshawa city council is calling on the Trudeau government to reject a controversial ethanol refinery that could be constructed near Lake Ontario and a provincially significant coastal wetland.

Nestlé could take more water in the Great Lakes region

Nestlé has made a conditional offer to purchase the Middlebrook Well in Elora, Ontario, formally owned by the Middlebrook Water Company. Nestlé wants to test the water first - for up to 60 days over a two year period - for quantity and quality and has applied for a Permit to Take Water with the Ontario government.
