Wet’suwet’en are in court TODAY, defending land, air and water from Coastal GasLink’s (CGL) liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline.

As the project slowly snakes its way across northern British Columbia, Coastal Gas Link has been caught in multiple acts of environmental destruction.

In response, all clans of the Wet’suwet’en, acting in unity, launched a Judicial Review of the Coastal GasLink project. At issue are numerous ongoing permit violations by the company, along with a failure by the BC Environmental Assessment Office to implement recommendations of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women and Girls.

Despite an eviction by Wet’suwet’en leadership — whose jurisdiction in their territory was confirmedin the landmark Delgamuukw case — the company has pressed on in building a fracked gas pipeline that would contribute to climate catastrophe. From failure to protect endangered species to blocking Indigenous people from accessing their traplines, CGL’s violations are in clear contravention of BC’s environmental regulations as well as the company’s own policies.

It’s profoundly unjust. Why should Indigenous Peoples have to use their limited resources to hold governments and companies accountable?

That’s why we are so grateful we can turn to the RAVEN community. Together, you have organized events, set up online fundraisers, and donated over $220K to support legal challenges to CGL. From coast to coast to coast, we are backing courageous Indigenous leaders with a commitment that is unfrackable.

Will you stand behind Wet’suwet’en leaders, and contribute to the legal defence fund at this critical moment?

DONATE

With CGL’s record of brazen rule-breaking, it’s no wonder Indigenous People are outraged at the presence of under-regulated “man-camps” in their territory. Along with endangering women and girls, industrial workcamps packed with a transient workforce located adjacent to vulnerable Indigenous communities are all the more concerning in a time of COVID-19. Influxes of outsiders to remote, underserviced areas — coupled with lax enforcement — are potentially lethal.

“Far from being exceptions, these infractions show an established pattern of non-compliance,” said Dinï’ze Hagwilneghl of the Laksilyu Clan. Together with all other hereditary chiefs of Wet’suwet’en, Hagiwilneghl is in court to demand an end to “an atmosphere of impunity within Coastal GasLink and the resource sector as a whole.”

Wet’suwet’en caretakers cannot simply let sleeping watchdogs lie: they need all hands on deck so they have the resources to challenge the company in court. A win could quash the Coastal GasLink project approval: please stand with Wet’suwet’en and make a donation.

We are immeasurably grateful to you for stepping up in the name of justice. Thank you for your staunch support to Nations who are upholding principles that - though costly to defend - are priceless.

In solidarity,
Andrea Palframan
