Become a protector of the Peace River r1 ...

The Peace River Valley is one of the most spectacular places on the planet. For over 10,000 years, First Nations have called this home.

The area BC Hydro proposes to flood covers 30,000 acres of prime farmland, along with bird sanctuaries, moose calving grounds, and ancient First Nations cultural sites. It’s no wonder Heritage Canada listed the Peace River Valley as one of the top ten most endangered historical sites in Canada.

Watch this new video by Damien Gillis of the Common Sense Canadian to see just how beautiful Treaty 8 lands are, and hear passionate frontline voices appeal for more sustainable development.

“We are drawing the line alongside our farmer neighbours. We are taking the government to court over this plan and the unjust process that is pushing it forward.”

The proposed Site-C dam could wipe out thousands of years of history, and a natural treasure. Treaty 8 First Nations stand to lose a huge swath of their traditional territory. The resulting habitat loss and mercury poisoning of fish threaten to push their ability to hunt, fish, trap, and gather medicinal plants over the edge. They have taken a stand, and launched legal action against the federal and provincial governments based on their treaty rights.

With your help, they have a good chance of winning this case. By standing up and saying, “Enough!” Treaty 8 Nations are protecting not only their own land, but the whole of BC from exorbitant hydro rates - all for power that the experts at the Joint Review Panel said is not demonstrably needed.

You’ve made it clear you are willing to step forward and support this legal challenge. Since we launched our Join the Circle campaign to raise funds for First Nations opposing this project, more than 500 people have donated $45,000. We need to raise $250,000 to ensure their case gets a fair hearing. We know from previous campaigns that when thousands of people pitch in $20, $50, and $100, we can get the job done.

“Cowboys and Indians are coming together to protect the Peace River valley and save British Columbians a lot of money. We can still stop this disastrous project: we are the last line of defence. But we need your help.”

It is an honour to be invited to stand with such courageous elders and activists. Join the Circle and protect the Peace for all of our descendants.
