Dear Friends and Allies! You are invited to the event: A Report From The Front Lines: The Unist'ot'en Camp!

On August 17th (this coming Monday), members of the Unist'ot'en and Wet'suwet'en Territories are coming to the First Peoples' House, at the University of Victoria (map here: http://www.uvic.ca/home/about/campus-info/maps/maps/fph.php), starting at 6pm. This fundraising and speaking event will bring together many members of the Unist'ot'en to speak about their experience, and share what it has meant to them to protect and uphold their laws in relation to the land. This is will be an informative and welcoming event, where you will get an opportunity to hear from those on the front lines.
All Are Welcome.
The organizers would like to acknowledge the Host Communities and Nations whose territories this event is being held on, the... Lkwungen (Esquimalt, and Songhess) and W̱SÁNEĆPeoples.
A note on Time: The event will start at 6pm, with a dinner that is open to all (please see note about food below). The speaking will likely start shortly after 7pm.
Why a fundraising/speaking tour? And who are the Unist'ot'en?
From the Poster (attached) "The five Wet'suwet'en clans including the Unist'ot'en, through our Hereditary Chief Structure, have taken a united stand against the construction of fossil fuel pipelines through our territory. The Unist'ot'en Camp is a non-violent occupation of the Unist'ot'en territory. It is an expression of the continuing and unbroken chain of occupation and use of our territory by our clan. This is unceded, untreatied territory and through our continuous use and occupation, our traditional structures of governance retain complete jurisdiction and final authority over our lands, waters and use thereof."

Please read below for more details of the event:
Some notes around accessibility: The First Peoples' House is on the ground level, as is the Ceremonial Hall - where the event is being held. There are three bathrooms, all with larger stalls and handrails. Some folks have a sensitivity, and allergy, to chemical smells such as perfume and deodorant - please refrain from wearing these products at the event. ASL is being looked into, but is not confirmed as of this point.
A note on children and childcare: The organizers would love for the participation of children in the space, as they are part of our communities. Please give space for each other, regardless of age, so that we can learn together. With that said, there is a small room that will be attended by a childcare professional from 6-9pm.
A couple notes on food: There is no major catering for the event. Instead, the invitation is kinda like a potluck =) Folks with the means and time, please feel free to bring food to share. All are still welcome to come and eat, even if you can't bring something to share. Cause, ya know, capitalism. If you are into bringing food, and have time/are able, please label ingredients for allergy purposes. The First Peoples' House also has a strict policy about no oranges.
A request from the folks coming down: They tend to eat a meat and fish rich diet. If you are in any position to bring any wild game - moose, venison beaver, bear or salmon, any of these are most appreciated.
A note about video recording: While not confirmed, it is highly possible that this event will be recorded by the Native Students Union. An organizer will let folks know before the speaking, as to give space for those who do not wish to be on video.
With all this said, please share what would help make this space more accessible for you. The organizers will do all we can to provide any assistance that makes the space more welcoming, safe, and well..accessible.
