A crowd gathers October 22nd changing us here is B.C. forever:

Yesterday a.m. before teaching I went to the opening speeches of “Defend our Coast.” I was nervous as I had seen invitations to civil disobedience school promoted the weekend before

and experienced the level of anger present in the beginning of the Victoria’s Occupy movement. It was with great relieve and pleasure to hear the ceremony of B.C. First Nations open the gathering and begin the dialogues. These opening speakers discussed the values that they are longing for and that they (we) are looking out for the children of the future, even those of Kindermorgan. It was extremely poignant to hear this and connect to our shared humanity. During the moments before leaving the event to meet my own commitments what I felt was a connection to group empathy based upon having a shared value – our waters, our earth, our children. It was beyond the cloths we wear, our colors and our jobs. It was a true recognition of our wealth and our elders and on this land our elders are a valuable resource. Today I and those around me felt history was being made and it ran deeper than the intention of this gathering. It was demonstrated in the respect we gave in honoring one of our most valuable resources, our First Nations people that spoke a language of connection and moved the crowd.
