What’s Connect?

From February 27th to March 9th volunteers in the Leadnow.ca community are hosting over 70 events all across Canada to launch our people-powered campaign for the next federal election and beyond.

The core idea is simple: if we start working together now, we’ll be able to help hold the Harper Conservatives accountable at the ballot box and elect people with a strong mandate to cooperate for action on democracy, climate, and inequality.

More than that, by working together in communities across the country, we’ll be able to build a movement strong enough to push for real changes after the election.

During Connect events, we’ll share this people-powered plan for the 2015 election and beyond, ask for your input, and introduce practical next steps to start having an impact in our communities. Click here to find a Connect event near you and RSVP.

We know that no single election can create an open democracy, build a fair economy and achieve climate justice - that will take a generation.

And that’s why we want to make this campaign different. Together, we can build a network of small teams in communities around the country who will make a difference in the next election, and lay a strong foundation to push for real changes after the election.

For immediate release March 4, 2014

Jewish group endorses Israeli Apartheid Week, rejects politicians’ baseless allegations of anti-Semitism OTTAWA – Independent Jewish Voices – Canada (IJV), a national Jewish human rights organization, is proud to endorse the tenth annual Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) and rejects any claims that the initiative is anti-Semitic. IAW organizers have always been committed to providing a safe, respectful and anti-racist environment in which to discuss the controversial subject of Israel's relationship with Palestinians. This is an environment in which anti-Semitism is outright condemned, despite allegations from Canadian politicians that applying the term Apartheid to Israel is in itself anti-Semitic. "It has been argued by international experts — and even by many leading Israeli and Jewish academics,...

Conscientious objector Omar Saad sentenced to prison for the fifth time for his refusal to join the Israeli Army

Dear Friends,I hope all is well with you. Please note that it has come to our attention that civilian lawyers, including lawyers from New Profile, are no longer allowed to visit Omar and other objectors, during his incarcerations in military prisons. The army claims that civilian lawyers are not certified to enter military prisons. We have appealed to Adalah (www.adalah.org/eng) to help us protest the issue. This is a definite attempt to deny legal counseling of a lawyer of his choice and infringes on his human rights.
I am including a link to the latest Israel Social TV's newscast from February 26, 2014. Please note the article on the "Military service as a springboard", http://tv.social.org.il/en

Conscientious objector Omar Saad sentenced to prison for the fifth time for his refusal to join the Israeli Army.

Omar Saad, 18 years old from Mghar, a village in the Galil, arrived, Sunday 2.3.2014, to the Induction Base in Tal Hashomer where he declared his refusal to serve in the Israeli Army. Omar was sentenced to 20 days of imprisonment for his refusal, in the military prison No. 6 near Atlit. We also want to inform you that it has come to our attention that civilian lawyers, including lawyers from New Profile, are no longer allowed to visit Omar and other objectors, during his incarcerations in military prisons. The army claims that civilian lawyers are not certified to enter military prisons. We have appealed to Adalah (www.adalah.org/eng) to help us protest the issue.  Omar is a young guy belonging to the Palestinian Arab Druze community. This community, in contrast to Arab society in large, was the target of a decision by Prime Minister Ben Gurion in 1956 that forced them to serve in the Israeli army. following this decision, mobilization orders were sent to all Druze citizens in deployment age. That decision was faced with serious resistance from the Druze community for many reasons. The main reasons were: refusing to fight against their own people and demanding to be treated just like the rest of the Palestinian Arab society in Israel.
