If you can't stand the fire or the floods,
fight back with SCNCC
SEPTEMBER 18, 2018
Dear member of the SCNCC community,
As fall approaches and the fires in the West are still raging, along comes Hurricane Florence to remind us that the climate in which human civilization developed is rapidly changing. Our sympathy goes to all the people afflicted by Florence and mounting climate disasters around the world. It is becoming clearer that even those of us in the most developed countries will not escape the consequences of capitalism's crazed commitment to burn fossil fuels no matter what the cost to future generations of life on Earth. According to the New Yorker Magazine, the rich are
betting on converted missile solos to shield them from the worst.
Want to bet on the humans instead? SCNCC exists because we believe the only antidote to despair is to fight back. It's time to nationalize, socialize, and phase out the fossil fuel industry.

“The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line.” —W.E.B. Du Bois What can the twenty-first century ecoleft learn from the protests outside Jerry Brown's Global Climate Action Summit. How can white ecosocialists make common cause with the anticapitalist alliances of climate and environmental justice activists of color?

Faith that environmental catastrophe can best be avoided by technological gadgetry rather than a change in social relationships received a big shot in the arm with the May 2018 publication of the book Energy: A Human History, a book touting the virtues of nuclear power. But will the extreme threat of climate change move closer to resolution by trivializing the menace of nuclear power?

“Deindustrialization.” That’s a word you virtually never hear in the debate around global warming. Not surprising. It’s a word that’s loaded with negative implications. In this article, SCNCC cofounder Richard Smith argues it's time for an honest public conversation about what it will really take to get off fossil fuels and maintain a livable planet.

The author agonized on what to title this short piece, designed to highlight the grave problems facing humanity. Is it too late to reverse the direction of global warming and the inevitable catastrophic impacts of climate change?

Four years ago an American ecosocialist comrade from Solidarity US and the System Change Not Climate Change coalition visited the UK for a holiday and also to meet with ecosocialist comrades. What's changed?
Naomi Klein | The Intercept |
August 3, 2018
Responding to the NY Times Magazine epic single-article issue on climate politics, Naomi Klein places the blame for climate inaction on capitalism and calls for "democratic eco-socialism" and criticizes the Times' piece's author for ultimately blaming systemic problems on everyone and no one.
