Dear Paov,
This spring looks different than any other in our lives.
The changes, disruptions and new norms this pandemic has brought are unprecedented. But some things remain constant despite COVID-19, and one of those is the struggle to protect old-growth forests. This fight is not a new one, but this year could be the most important moment in determining the fate of these non-renewable, life-giving ecosystems.
Last year, the BC government ordered a review of its broken old-growth policy because of the movement to protect old-growth forests — action taken by you and thousands like you. Cabinet ministers will receive the final report at the end of April and then, over this spring and summer, decide what changes to make. Frustratingly, the Horgan government has indicated it won’t make the report public for months — probably until after it has decided what to do.
