Safeguarding nature and culture in Tsilhqot'in Nation territory
Hi PAOV,
I’m writing today to ask you to write a quick note to the Premier of BC and Prime Minister of Canada in support of the Tsilhqot’in Nation and their plans to designate 300,000 hectares of spectacular wilderness on BC’s Chilcotin Plateau as the Dasiqox Tribal Park.
Last weekend, I was camped within the proposed tribal park boundaries on the shore of Fish Lake, at a gathering in celebration of the Dasiqox proposal. We have worked for years with our allies to successfully stop a massive open-pit mine proposed in this area. Now the entire region is being proposed as a tribal park – which is great news.
Everyone at the gathering was excited to hear how about progress in planning the new tribal park. A crew of 19 horse riders, comprised of the Tsilhqot’in and their friends and neighbours, had just returned from a five-day tour of the area.
They had crossed five mountain passes, seen six grizzly bears and spent many hours riding through trail-less forests – and they were all mighty impressed with the wild country they had traversed.
There was only one dark cloud over the gathering.
Mayor Walt Cobb of nearby Williams Lake had just said in a radio interview that he intended to write to the provincial and federal governments to oppose the new Dasiqox Tribal Park proposal.
This is where you come in. Can you write to the Premier and Prime Minister in support of the tribal park proposal?
