Safeguarding nature and culture in Tsilhqot'in Nation territory

Horseback trip in Dasiqox Tribal Park (Jeremy Williams)

Hi PAOV,

I’m writing today to ask you to write a quick note to the Premier of BC and Prime Minister of Canada in support of the Tsilhqot’in Nation and their plans to designate 300,000 hectares of spectacular wilderness on BC’s Chilcotin Plateau as the Dasiqox Tribal Park.

Last weekend, I was camped within the proposed tribal park boundaries on the shore of Fish Lake, at a gathering in celebration of the Dasiqox proposal. We have worked for years with our allies to successfully stop a massive open-pit mine proposed in this area. Now the entire region is being proposed as a tribal park – which is great news.

Everyone at the gathering was excited to hear how about progress in planning the new tribal park. A crew of 19 horse riders, comprised of the Tsilhqot’in and their friends and neighbours, had just returned from a five-day tour of the area.

They had crossed five mountain passes, seen six grizzly bears and spent many hours riding through trail-less forests – and they were all mighty impressed with the wild country they had traversed.

There was only one dark cloud over the gathering.

Mayor Walt Cobb of nearby Williams Lake had just said in a radio interview that he intended to write to the provincial and federal governments to oppose the new Dasiqox Tribal Park proposal.

This is where you come in. Can you write to the Premier and Prime Minister in support of the tribal park proposal?

A few points to consider when writing your letter:

  • The proposed Dasiqox Tribal Park is located about 125 kilometres southwest of Williams Lake BC and covers over three hundred thousand hectares of spectacular wilderness and prime wildlife habitats.
  • The Dasiqox Tribal Park initiative is a tremendous opportunity to support the human rights of the Tsilhqot’in people and to protect the region’s abundant fish and wildlife.
  • Logging operations and mining claims threaten to fragment this valuable wilderness area. The tribal park would ensure that Dasiqox is not ruined by further industrial activity.
  • Many Canadians support the Tsilhqot’in people in their efforts to preserve their historic Tsilhqot’in lands.
  • It is very important that the governments of BC and Canada support the Tsilhqot’in Nation in their efforts to protect their wilderness, wildlife and culture.

Thank you for taking action to support this exciting initiative!

For the wild.
