Yesterday, Transportation Minister Claire Trevena announced that the BC government has no plans to replace the Greyhound service along the Highway of Tears -- despite the fact that without it, the lives of Indigenous women and girls will be put at risk. [1]
Highway 16 is known as the Highway of Tears because of the high number of primarily Indigenous women and girls who have gone missing or been murdered while hitchhiking. [2] When Greyhound announced plans to cancel their bus service on the route, Minister Trevena said that the BC Government would make sure that communities along the highway have access to safe, reliable and affordable transportation. [3]
We need to let Minister Trevena know that not having a plan is not an option. A massive petition signed by thousands of people in BC could be enough to force the Minister to act, and put safe and affordable transportation in place before the Greyhound service ends in May.
