Highway of Tears

Yesterday, Transportation Minister Claire Trevena announced that the BC government has no plans to replace the Greyhound service along the Highway of Tears -- despite the fact that without it, the lives of Indigenous women and girls will be put at risk. [1]

Highway 16 is known as the Highway of Tears because of the high number of primarily Indigenous women and girls who have gone missing or been murdered while hitchhiking. [2] When Greyhound announced plans to cancel their bus service on the route, Minister Trevena said that the BC Government would make sure that communities along the highway have access to safe, reliable and affordable transportation. [3]

We need to let Minister Trevena know that not having a plan is not an option. A massive petition signed by thousands of people in BC could be enough to force the Minister to act, and put safe and affordable transportation in place before the Greyhound service ends in May.

So, Supa, will you add your name now?

Bus service along Highway 16 was a key recommendation of the Highway of Tears Symposium in 2006 -- and if the BC Government doesn’t replace the Greyhound service, more people will be forced to hitchhike to get where they need to go. [4]

The story is in the media right now, but it won’t be for long. We need to seize this opportunity, and send the message loud and clear to Minister Trevena that putting the lives of Indigenous women and girls at risk is not acceptable. Will you sign the petition now and demand that the BC government provide safe, affordable transportation before Greyhound’s service ends in May?
