It’s on: Get involved in the Kinder Morgan pipeline review

Kinder Morgan Marine Terminal (Joe Foy)

Hello PAOV,

If you want to participate in the official review process for Kinder Morgan’s tar sands pipeline, now is your chance!

Yesterday, Canada’s National Energy Board (NEB) opened up applications for the public to participate in hearings on the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline. The NEB sure hasn’t made it easy for people to get involved, but we are here to help you through the process so that you can have your say.

To apply, members of the public must sign up on the NEB website and complete an online application. If you aren’t able to fill the form out online, you can call the number listed on the website and wait for a hard copy to be delivered by mail.

Applications from individuals and groups wishing to participate will be only accepted from January 15th to February 12th, 2014.

This is the only chance we have to get involved in the federal environmental assessment to formally oppose Kinder Morgan’s pipeline and tanker plans. If you don’t apply now you won’t be able to participate in the upcoming hearings, and the NEB will not even consider your written comments. So it’s critical that we get as many people signed up as we can!

Here’s what you can do:

1) Log onto the NEB website and apply online.  Because of recent changes to Canadian environmental assessment legislation, participants are now required to prove that they are either “directly affected” by the proposed project or have “relevant expertise”. The NEB has to approve your application – whether you want to participate as an intervenor or even if you just want to submit a written letter of comment. If you feel that you will be affected by the project in any way, it’s worth submitting an application to take part in the review process. Click here to visit the NEB website and apply.

2) Attend a workshop. To support you in your application to participate, we’ll be hosting workshops in both Vancouver and Victoria. We can help walk you through the online form, answer your questions about the process and make sure your concerns are effectively submitted to the NEB. Our first workshop will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 6pm at our Vancouver office, and we’re also planning one in Victoria (date TBD). For details and locations, click here.

3) Check out our Save the Salish Sea website for news, updates, links and other helpful resources. On the “Latest” page, we’ll continue to post new information about upcoming events, local groups working to stop the proposal and other workshops or events happening in different communities. Click here to visit the website now.

If you’re applying to participate or have any other correspondence with the NEB, please let us know by emailing us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We want to keep track of how many of our supporters are applying and what the response is like from the regulators. If you feel that you have a stake in this decision and are being turned away, keep us posted!

I realize this process may seem daunting, but it’s important that we mobilize now to make sure that our voices are heard. Just remember – you’re not alone! The Kinder Morgan pipeline represents a huge threat to our communities, our coast and our climate, and we’re not going to sit back and let the hearings proceed without letting officials know how we feel.

Never Mine Clayoquot: Forum next Tues. Jan 21

Never Mine Clayoquot Event Poster

Hi PAOV,

Clayoquot Sound is a region of unprecedented ecological value and cultural diversity. But it has a history of resource overexploitation – and it continues today. The threat of clearcut logging in some of Canada’s last intact coastal temperate rainforests is always present, and recently, some parts of Clayoquot have been targeted for mining.

The most immediate plans are to explore a potential gold deposit at a site called Fandora in the Tranquil Valley, in Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation territory near Tofino. The Tla-o-qui-aht are worried about the impacts of mining on their forest recovery and their salmon rehabilitation efforts. They have also declared the Tranquil Valley a Tribal Park, and mining is in direct contrast with their sustainable management strategies and goals.

The Wilderness Committee strongly supports Tla-o-qui-aht opposition to mining in their territory, and we see Tribal Parks as a positive economic alternative.

Join us in our first selection of 2014 and share your experience in our babble thread before the final discussion on January 17 at 2 p.m. EST.

Foreign Minister John Baird has just named lawyer and ardent Netanyahu government cheerleader Vivian Bercovici as Canada's new Ambassador to Israel, in advance of the Prime Minister's first trip to that country later this month. Over the holiday period rabble's Parliamentary Reporter Karl Nerenberg did his best to prepare the ground for the PM with his own visit and now shares some of his notes. Read his story here.

Book Review: Undoing Border Imperialism by Harsha Walia

by DAWN PALEY

Also in Migration:

Borderless Cities

This review was originally posted by Upside Down World.

Undoing Border Imperialism, by Harsha Walia, introduction by Andrea Smith. AK Press, 2013.

Anyone who has been involved in activism in any of Canada’s largest cities has probably worked with Harsha Walia at some point along the way. An organizing powerhouse who is active across issues and with a lengthy list of groups, Walia is also a writer and regular public speaker. Somehow, amidst a flurry of events and other work, she found the time to grace us with her first book, Undoing Border Imperialism, which came out with Oakland’s AK Press in the fall. In more ways than one, the book is a true manifestation of theory meeting practice, taking strength from Walia’s varied and extensive readings, from her personal life experiences, and from over a decade of movement organizing in Canada.

“Undoing border imperialism would mean a freer society for everyone since borders are the nexus of most systems of oppression,” writes Walia. “Rather than conceiving of immigration as a domestic policy issue to be managed by the state, the lens of border imperialism focuses the conversation on the systemic structuring of global displacement and migration through and in collusion with capitalism, colonial empire, state building, and hierarchies of oppression.”

Walia carefully outlines her theory of border imperialism, but she doesn’t stop there the way an academic or journalist might. Instead, she dedicates the bulk of the text to reflection and to proposals around what makes for meaningful activism in this context. Undoing Border Imperialism lays out a compelling definition of the concept of border imperialism, and then takes readers through concrete experiences of how it can be challenged and dismantled.
