A new era

A new era r1 ... We're coming to you from Port Renfrew, B.C., this week, where we're spending some quality time with our new Alberta reporter Sharon — who you fine people helped us hire back in the summer.

Port Renfrew is a bit of a paradox: it's an old logging town that now attracts thousands of tourists each year to see some of Vancouver Island's last remaining old-growth trees. It's also got its share of loggers, surfers and fishermen. We love its complexity and character and are looking to let more of those qualities shine through in all of the stories we tell.

In other news, since we wrote to you last week about our Nights With The Narwhal event in Victoria, it sold out in less than 24 hours. Fear not, you can still register online to watch the livestream.

This week we have a good news story for you (for real!) and a couple more complicated tales. Keep scrolling!

Did B.C. misrepresent public ‘support’ for Douglas-fir protection plan?

By Judith Lavoie

B.C. recently announced that 98 per cent of individuals who filled out a survey on a new Douglas-fir forest plan, 'supported' the government's proposal. But upon closer inspection, those numbers don't really add up. Read more. As a non-profit organization, nobody owns The Narwhal. We also don't sell advertising.
