Lets keep the pressure up

Last week, hundreds visited their MPs with demands for action -- today, let’s keep the pressure up r1

Dear friends,

We are less than a year away from the next federal election and the clock is ticking for politicians to bring our climate policy in line with what scientists and people living on the frontlines of climate change keep telling us is necessary.

In the midst of climate crisis we need a bold vision and an ambitious plan. That’s exactly why I was one of hundreds of people across the country who took action last week to deliver the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s landmark climate change report to my MP’s office.

If you didn’t get a chance to visit your MP’s office, maybe you can consider sending an email to your MP instead. Take 2 minutes to email your MP on our simple one click form....

Almost two thirds of all MP offices across the country received this report along with demands to match Canada’s climate policies with the urgency of the crisis.

Last week Justin Trudeau announced the next piece of his climate plan - a carbon price. While it’s a good step in the right direction, it’s nowhere near enough. Canada’s international climate commitments are the same as they were under Stephen Harper and are nowhere near enough to keep us within a 1.5°C rise in average global temperatures. What’s more, we’re not even on track to meet those commitments.

We need more aggressive climate targets and we need policies to meet those targets. We need to stop approving and expanding massive fossil fuel projects and take concrete steps to build a 100% renewable energy economy that respects Indigenous rights and works for everyone.

Doing nothing on climate change is unacceptable, but doing the bare minimum will land us in the same place, especially when the solutions to this crisis are so clear. That’s why hundreds of us hand-delivered a demand for ambition to our MP’s from coast to coast last week. Will you e-deliver this demand to align Canada’s climate policies with science?

We know that politicians across Canada are already planning their campaigns for 2019. Some might say the election campaign has already begun. Let’s remind our leaders that we’re watching every decision they make on climate change in the year ahead -- and looking for real leadership when we head to the ballot box.
