Dear friends,
Cyber security is increasingly a national security matter. But what does rights protective cyber security look like?
Today, we explored this very question in a meeting with the elected officials charged with civilian oversight of our national security infrastructure, the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP).
Read my latest blog “Why Cyber is Red-Hot” here.In many instances, our personal security is undermined in the name of “national security” whenever security threats loom. This leads to significant government over-reach, as we’ve seen in Edward Snowden’s NSA revelations and in Canada’s own national security laws.
It's critically important that our cyber security be effective, but it’s also critical that the approach upholds civil liberties and human rights.
How can we ensure that cyber security strategy upholds civil liberties?
Read more here.Next week, we’ll be at the Canadian Cyber Security Dialogue in Ottawa to meet with the very institutions that maintain our national security infrastructure.
We’ll be pushing for key changes to our current national security apparatus, so stay tuned for updates as our fight for more accountability and transparency continues.
Sincerely,
Micheal Vonn
Policy Director
