We’re back in court!

Dear friends and supporters,
The federal government is dragging the BCCLA back to court next Tuesday, November 13th, in an attempt to overturn our ruling striking down indefinite solitary confinement in federal prisons.
At the same time, the government has introduced their new bill they say will “end solitary,” but we are concerned it will continue much of the same practice by another name.
Enough is enough.
Help us end the abuse of long-term solitary confinement by raising $5,000 by next Thursday.
Donate NowAt our trial at the BC Supreme Court, the government heard from people with direct lived experience of solitary confinement. BobbyLee Worm spoke of the 1,123 days she spent in isolation. Amanda Lepine told of how her experience of solitary followed a lifetime of incarceration that began at just 14 years old. And we heard the story of Christopher Roy, a young man who died by suicide after being denied meaningful human contact for up to 23 hours a day.
Faced with proven harms and health risks, the federal government has chosen to ignore the truth of solitary confinement and the judge’s remedies outlined in our historic ruling, and instead, they are fighting to overturn the decision.
Support our fight to end this torturous practice by making a donation today.Meanwhile, the government’s flawed new legislation does not ensure independent review of solitary placements, fails to set a hard cap on days spent in isolation, and preserves the power of corrections staff to place people in solitary for lengthy periods.
The government’s decision to continue the fight in court, while introducing this flawed legislation, makes me very worried that the truth of solitary confinement will continue to be denied — unless we speak it together, loudly, again and again:
Solitary confinement is torture, and we will not stand for it.
Sincerely,
Josh Paterson
