THE WORKING CLASS ROOTS OF #METOO
By Peter Dreier
An unsung shero of the early 20th century, Rose Schneiderman organized women to fight for laws to protect them from sexual harassment and assault in the workplace.
Whenever new protest movements emerge, people look to history for lessons from activists and thinkers who came before. We all stand on the shoulders of those who struggled, sacrificed, and organized to push for a more humane society.
#MeToo is one such movement. It has not only raised awareness about the pervasiveness of sexual harassment and assault—particularly of women—but is also an example of what happens when those who are relegated to a second-class citizenship status come together to speak out. Read more!
CO-OP WORKERS STRIKE IN MOOSE JAW AND SASKATOON
On the latest episode of Rank and File Radio – Prairies Edition, we cover the strike of over one thousand Co-op workers in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon, all members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1400. Moose Jaw workers have been on strike for just over a month. A few days ago, Saskatoon workers walked off the job at over 20 locations across the city. Rod Gillies, the director of negotiations for UFCW Local 1400, will provide an update on the latest round of bargaining with co-op, which occurred Friday, November 2. Read more!

Signs on placards or on the walls read “Don’t Be Evil,” or “Times Up Tech,” One woman wrote, “My outrage won’t fit on this sign.” Nearly everywhere workers held short rallies where women read the movement’s demands. Read more!

My absolute favourite demand for service was made during a Labour Day session at my local pub, when an acquaintance saddled up and said “You’re an electrician? Good, I need one fast and cheap! I’m flipping a house! I’ve got beer!”
I always decline these *tantalizing* offers but if they persist I usually play the bureaucratic card until their eyes glaze over. I don’t have a contractors license, a minimum two million dollars liability insurance, a master electricians license Read more!
