Dear PAOV,If you’d have told me back in May that six months later we’d be up on stage winning four Canadian Online Publishing Awards, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.
But it’s true — last night at a ceremony in Toronto we took home four awards, including silver for best publication, silver for best news website and a gold and a silver for best photo essays.
As a regular reader, you’ve been with us every step of the way and I want to say a heartfelt thank you. The Narwhal exists because of people like you.
Many people don’t realize we have just three full-time staff and don’t have an office, but if one thing is clear after last night it's that we punch far above our weight.
As a non-profit news outlet that doesn’t run advertising, we are so proud to be able to say: nobody owns us. And that’s only possible because good people like yourself have stepped up and dared to believe that another model for news is possible.
Right now, 439 readers give what they can each month to make our independent investigative journalism possible. We’re looking for 61 more founding members of The Narwhal to sign up by Nov. 30th. Can you become a member today?
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed about the state of the world these days, but it truly is amazing what a small group of committed people can accomplish. Together, our monthly members contribute more than $6,000 a month. Can you give $10 or $20 a month to be part of the solution?
Building an investigative news outlet these days isn’t easy. There have been a lot of late nights and early mornings, budget nightmares and Twitter trolls.
But there are also the beautiful things that make it all worthwhile: the communities that are eternally thankful we are shining a light on their stories, the sheer beauty of this country of ours and the vast opportunity we have to save some of the last wild places on the planet.
And then there’s you, our readers. You make our whole world go around.
You make it possible for two young journalists with a dream to pioneer a non-profit news model that fundamentally changes the news landscape by focusing on the foundational, not the sensational, and diving deep to tell stories that aren't told anywhere else.
