Dewayne Johnson

A jury has ruled that Monsanto's toxic weedkiller, glyphosate, caused a man's terminal cancer.

This could be a landmark precedent with the potential to do huge damage to Bayer & Monsanto. Even ultimately ridding the world of glyphosate for good, but it’s going to be a long fight.

Please will you chip in monthly to take on the chemical giants?

A,

Father of three, Dewayne Johnson, made history this summer when a jury ruled that his terminal cancer was caused by the weedkiller glyphosate. But Monsanto, and its parent company Bayer, are refusing to accept responsibility.

The chemical giants are gearing up to appeal the decision, and continue to inflict misery on Mr Johnson and his family.

SumOfUs members like you have been at the forefront of the fightback against Bayer. This month, after his lawyers called on SumOfUs to help support Mr Johnson, thousands of SumOfUs members like you chipped in. Together, we’re helping give him the resources he and his family need to keep up his game-changing fight.

Bayer’s execs are terrified of the precedent this sets, A. They’re quaking at the thought of the thousands more potential cases, and the hundreds of billions of dollars in damages they might have to pay.

We need to keep this issue in the spotlight to bring the chemical giants to justice, but it’s going to be a long fight, A -- we need long-term support to make it happen, and we need to kick start it right now. Can you chip in monthly to take on Bayer and Monsanto?

In August, a judge ordered Monsanto to pay Mr Johnson $289 million in damages.

Now, the judge has lowered the punitive damages to $78.5 million, which Mr Johnson has accepted. His attorney said Mr Johnson, who could have only months to live, hopes to “achieve a final resolution within his lifetime”.

But, despite these horrendous circumstances for Mr Johnson and his family, Bayer is gearing up to appeal the decision and refuse to pay out.

Monsanto knows that if the ruling stands, it could set a precedent leading to compensation for everyone who’s got cancer from its deadly weedkiller.

Some analysts have said that class-action lawsuits could mean Bayer might face nearly $700 billion in liabilities. This could have a huge financial impact on the this corporate chemical giant and ultimately lead to a permanent ban on glyphosate.

This is a huge moment in the fight against Bayer and Monsanto, but we need to keep the people-powered wave of action against the chemical giants going in 2019. Please will you chip in monthly to to take on Bayer & Monsanto?

For years, Monsanto has been covering up the risks of glyphosate; ghost-writing studies, silencing critics and unleashing their armies of cashed up corporate lobbyists to block bans on their toxic products.

But SumOfUs members like you are fighting back. Last year, over one million of you told the EU Commission to outlaw the toxic herbicide. And right now, as well as supporting Mr Johnson’s fight, you’re backing a potentially landmark case to keep pushing for a permanent ban.

We’re so close to a massive, history-making victory for ordinary citizens over deadly corporate greed, A, but we have to keep fighting until we’ve stopped glyphosate good.

SumOfUs has less than 40 staff and we keep overheads down. We’re small, but we’re effective. And the more we can depend on regular donations from members like you, the more time we can spend taking on mega-corps like Monsanto.

We’re 100% independent. We take no money from government or corporations -- we run almost entirely on small donations from the members like you. Right now we have the opportunity to make a real dent in Bayer and Monsanto's defences. People on the frontline in the fight against glyphosate are relying on you to help make it happen.
