Trump's baby jails

The CPP is investing millions of your retirement savings in the US private prison corporations carrying out horrific immigration detention of children and families in the US.

But we may be on the cusp of forcing them to divest.

Can you chip in to get a critical public opinion poll into the field ASAP to get the CPP out of prisons now?

A,

The Canada Pension Plan is investing millions of your hard-earned retirement savings in US private prisons responsible for incarcerating immigrant children and families as part of Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance" immigration policy.

But thanks to you, we could be on the verge of winning. We just came out of a meeting with CPP executives, and it's clear your campaign has them rattled -- and considering divesting.

We have them on the ropes -- so now it’s time to go all out. With less than 2 weeks until the CPP's national meeting tour ends, we have a short but critical window to make one final push to win.

We’ve just contracted a top public polling firm that is ready to get a powerful public poll into the field this week. A public poll will ensure the CPPIB knows just how wrong they are on this issue and that they need to urgently take action to get our retirement savings out of prison corporations.

Can you please help us reach $5,000 to get the poll in the field, A?

Records show that while children in cages made international headlines, the CPP increased its investments in both GEO Group and CoreCivic. Immigrants who have been held at GEO group facilities have reported disturbing sexual abuse and appalling conditions. A lawsuit against CoreCivic alleges that it forces detainees to work through threats of physical violence, solitary confinement and deprivation of basic necessities for $1-$4 a day.

These two private-prison companies are incarcerating 60% of immigrants locked up by Trump’s brutal policies -- and it is not hyperbolic to say that these companies are literally profiting off of Trump’s heinous and xenophobic policies. That's why both companies backed Trump's election run.

The CPP has maintained that computers, not people, made these investments in US private prisons. But at the end of the day, humans signed off on those investments and decided that the reputational risk of investing our retirement savings in two of the companies committing some of the most egregious human rights violations of our time was okay.

The CPP is receiving intense public pressure -- and it is scrambling to decide what to do. Your donation today will fund a critical poll that could help the CPP realize how urgently it needs to act, and that it can't wait for this to blow over.

Being caught in a massive scandal is the one thing the CPP wants to desperately avoid. If it knows that public pressure is solidly against investing in Trump's baby jails, and that anything less of divesting will erode's Canadians' trust in the CPP, they will have no choice but to act.

Our polling firm is ready to get to work, and we'll be ready to get a copy of the results in the hands of every journalist covering this issue in Canada, and beyond, to time perfectly with the final public hearings. Can you chip in now?

Right now, a lot of multi-billion dollar corporations are making a lot of money off of the incarceration and detention of families being torn apart. And, living in Canada, it sometimes feels like there isn’t a lot we can do. But one concrete thing we can do now is to make sure our hard-earned money is not invested in companies like GEO Group and Core Civic.

The most strategic time for the CPP to get your message is now. With the hearings in their final 2 weeks, we're already cooking up plans to pack the meetings, and we're going all out. This poll will add to the growing wave of public opposition that has been building since this story broke.

Your donation will go to get a strategic poll about the feelings of Canadians about our retirement savings being invested in private prisons.

Getting one of the largest pension funds in the world to divest out of private prisons isn't something that would be nice to do, it's something we must do. We'll keep fighting until we win.

Thanks for all that you do,
Emma, Amelia and the team at SumOfUs
