Welcoming the New Councils

NationBuilder r1 BC Poverty Reduction Coalition

Hi Friend --

As our new municipal councils sit for their first meetings, we hope that they will take action... to address poverty and homelessness in our communities and many made promises to do so. However, municipal councils cannot address these pressing social issues alone. Solving the challenges of poverty requires all three levels of government working in collaboration. This is why it is so important to align municipal commitments with provincial and federal strategies.

Read our toolkit about what Municipalities Can and Can't Do to Prevent and Reduce Poverty in our Communities.

As the province is currently developing a plan to be released next spring, it’s critical that they hear from as many voices as possible now about the need for a strong poverty reduction plan, which is accountable, bold and comprehensive. Municipal governments have the potential to be a strong voice in this call.

We've developed a draft resolution that local councils can use to call for an accountable, bold and comprehensive provincial poverty reduction plan. We encourage you to email your council and ask them to pass such a resolution.

In the lead up to the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) 2016 annual convention, 24 municipalities adopted resolutions calling for a comprehensive and accountable provincial poverty reduction strategy. The UBCM resolution was passed that September. If your municipality was one of the 24 (see this map for details), then you can build on their previous support. Now that a poverty reduction plan is being developed, we are asking incoming councils to renew the call for an accountable, bold and comprehensive plan for BC and to commit to working with the provincial government to implement such a plan.

Will you join us in emailing your new council encouraging them to call for an accountable, bold and comprehensive provincial poverty reduction plan?

Thanks for your support,

Trish, Viveca and Omar
