We're running out of time to stop copyright tax

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

Corporations are lobbying Parliament for a greedy wish list of revisions to the Copyright Act.

...

A music tax on every smartphone. A tax on Internet use over 15GB a month. Website blocking for Big Business. Mandatory content filters for all user-generated content.

We're running out of time to stop them. Parliament will stop accepting comments from the public in response to these proposals on December 10. After that, it's in the hands of the committee—and the corporate lobbyists who influence its members.

We're pulling out all the stops to make sure Parliament says NO to taxing and censoring our Internet. And thanks to a generous donor, every dollar you give to OpenMedia today will be MATCHED. Will you donate now?

OpenMedia has been on the front lines fighting the corporate takeover of the Internet through the Copyright Act review since last summer.

When Bell came out with a sweeping plan to censor and block websites, we rallied.1 When the music industry lobbied to tax our phones and our Internet usage, we fought back with ads and pushed thousands of public comments to Parliament.2

It's working. Our voices were so insistent that Parliament invited OpenMedia to speak about how these proposals would harm the free and open Internet.3

And we're not just fighting against corporate proposals for amendments to the Copyright Act—we're proposing some of our own, too.

We built an easy-to-use Internet tool to help visitors share some of their biggest priorities for a Digital Age Copyright Act—such as safe harbour rules that will keep ISPs from monitoring our content and strengthening the rights of the user so we can manage our own data.4

Now we just have a few more days to make sure our message to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology is unmistakable—and loud enough to drown out the corporate lobby.

Will you donate to help OpenMedia's final push to protect the Internet in the Copyright Act review? All donations will be DOUBLED.
