Paov,

Canada's free and open Internet is in greater danger today than ever before.

Parliament is considering legislation to tax our Internet use and to allow ISPs to unilaterally block websites.1 Net Neutrality has been called into question by the chair of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).2

Meanwhile, Canada's Communications Security Establishment is asking for dangerous new cyber-spying powers.3 And Big Telecom is pushing hard to keep competition out of Canada's cellular market so it can continue to charge the highest cell phone bills in the world.

With so many threats coming at us, OpenMedia has set a goal to raise $75,000 by January 1. And if you donate now, your gift will be DOUBLED by generous donors.

OpenMedia was founded to keep the Internet open, affordable, and surveillance-free—and that fight is going to be bigger than ever in the coming year.

Big Telecom continues to lobby hard for policies that would put their profits above the public interest, like the ability to blacklist websites and keep dominating Canada's wireless infrastructure so new companies can't enter the market and compete by offering better prices.

The government is also pushing for sweeping new powers to use the Internet to spy on us. A new bill called C-59 could give the Communications Security Establishment spying powers as well as the authority to disable network access, disseminate misinformation, and even interfere with the electricity grid—without meaningful government oversight.

But 2019 could also be the year we take back our Internet.

We have the chance to expand Internet access and privacy protections as Parliament takes up the revision of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Acts, the key laws that regulate Canada's Internet.

In addition, we're challenging the government to establish a meaningful national broadband strategy. It's been two years since the CRTC declared the Internet a basic service, yet 20% of Canadians don't have adequate access, and those of us who do are paying some of the highest prices in the world.

2019 is the year we can open the market to MVNOs and finally break the stranglehold of the Big Three.

We're a small but nimble team with big ambitious goals for 2019, and we need your help. We're very fortunate to have generous allies who have agreed to DOUBLE every donation we receive in December. Now it all comes down to you: Will you donate to help us take back the Internet in 2019?

DOUBLE YOUR DONATION

For the Internet,
Marie, and the whole team at OpenMedia
