Four things

Four things r1 ... View archive version Dear PAOV,

As 2018 draws to a close, I wanted to share a few reflections with you: our loyal readers, members and donors.

Most of all, I want to say thank you to each and every one of you for making The Narwhal a tremendous success.

Every time you share a story, make a donation or tell a friend about The Narwhal, you help change the face of the Canadian media landscape.

Before we launched in May, plenty of people told us we had an impossible dream, but you have helped prove the naysayers wrong time and time again — thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

With four Canadian Online Publishing Awards under our belts in the first six months, I think it’s safe to say The Narwhal is already punching well above its weight.

Looking ahead to next year, we’re dreaming big about how we want to keep innovating to produce smarter, more impactful journalism that serves the public interest. With that in mind here are our top four commitments to you for 2019.

1) We will serve you — our readers — first and foremost. We’re one of Canada’s first non-profit news outlets. What that really means is nobody owns us — no millionaires, no shareholders, no U.S. hedge funds. Every minute of every day we can focus on building a reader-funded, public interest news outlet that covers stories that nobody else will.

2) We are committed to quality, not quantity. Old-school news businesses make money by selling your attention to advertisers. To keep the dollars rolling in, they’re forced to publish tons of content, some of it good, some of it not-so-good. Our commitment to you is to avoid that whole dog-and-pony show by publishing original, thought-provoking, meaningful journalism that is consistently worthy of your time and attention.

3) We won’t shy away from complexity. It’s tempting to want to tie stories up with a bow, to simplify and make issues more black and white than they really are. But in an increasingly divided world, we believe that journalists have a responsibility to avoid oversimplifying complex topics. Research shows when people encounter complexity, they become more curious and less closed off to new information. We are committed to telling fuller, more nuanced stories, even when it’s difficult.

4) We’ll be bold. Our goal is to be bold not just in our reporting, but also in our vision for building a new kind of media in Canada. At the beginning of 2018 we counted just 150 monthly members. Now we count 550! By the end of 2019 our goal is to reach 1,000 members. If you’ve been thinking about becoming a member, why not start off 2019 on the right foot by becoming a member today?

Thank you for all you do to make non-profit, made-in-Canada, ad-free media a reality every day. We look forward to serving you in 2019.
