Call on the CRD to keep Sooke Hills wild!
Wilderness Committee

In the 90s, the Capital Regional District (CRD) showed vision and foresight by protecting a huge swathe of forest in the Sooke Hills, northwest of the Greater Victoria area.

Twenty years later, that amazing gift is at risk — a new highway through the Sooke Hills is being considered as an alternative to the Malahat. We need a solution for this highway bottleneck that respects hard-fought protected areas, which buffer our drinking water source and provide a sanctuary for nature, instead of cutting into them.

The CRD’s Water Commission and Parks Committee have recognized this, and on Wednesday, March 13 the Board of Directors will vote on a motion to oppose a new highway and champion other alternatives instead.

Encourage the directors to pass this motion! Click here to write a letter!

Your attendance is needed!
Three motions will be tabled - the first two motions will be approving the recent decisions of the Parks Committee and the Water Commission opposing any roadways through the CRD lands.
The third motion shifts the focus to transportation improvements along the Malahat and Highway 14 corridors. Together, these three motions will send a clear message to the provincial government on this issue: don't trash our legacy!
Let's pack the room and hammer another nail in this coffin!

CRD Board meeting
Mar 13, 2019, 11am
6th Floor Boardroom, 625 Fisgard Street, Victoria, BC

Coastal GasLink Ordered To Cease Work on Unist’ot’en Trapline Due to Non-Compliance With Permits

An inspection by the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) has found Coastal GasLink Pipeline Ltd. (CGL) to be in “non compliance” with three conditions of their environmental assessment certificate. The EAO has requested that CGL “immediately cease activities” within the trapline registered to our Hereditary Chief Knedebeas (Warner William) that may adversely affect the trapline’s use.

The BCEAO has found that Coastal GasLink failed to provide the required six months of advance notice for construction activities affecting our trapline, and additionally failed to conduct required site habitat assessments before beginning work.

CGL has been ordered to “not resume activities that may affect” the use of this trapline until June 12, 2019, or until the trap \line is no longer in use due to seasonal restrictions.

Thus far, Coastal GasLink has ignored the EAO cease and desist order...

Now it’s up to Trudeau to make a final decision. Will he sign a death sentence for the orcas just to help billionaire oil corporations rake in more cash? Is he willing to destroy his already precarious reputation on climate and Indigenous reconciliation to ram this project through?

Fundraising film screening, discussion

Sunday, March 17, 2019
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Building 310, 900 5th St, Nanaimo
Malaspina Theatre

Hosted by RAVEN Trust & Malaspina Theatre & Raven People Rising

Join RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs) for a lively discussion on the future of the Pacific Coast and the powerful resistance and leadership of Indigenous Peoples in shaping our common future.

The Heilstuk Nation upholds an unbroken lineage of ancestral teachings that powerfully connect people to place. Witness how the Heiltsuk used the courts to stop Enbridge — backed by thousands of supporters via the Pull Together campaign. Just six months after that court victory, the Nathan E. Stewart ran aground in their Great Bear Rainforest home. Again, the Heiltsuk took to the courts. Now, in the wake of the devastating spill, the Heiltsuk are working to enshrine Indigenous governance of their homelands and waters into law. They are taking power back from regulators asleep at the wheel to ensure that the Pacific coast is protected for future generations. Their work will ensure marine safety for anyone who cares about the coast, the climate and future generations.

With deep implications for fish farms and orca whales, the Heiltsuk have launched the first ever aboriginal title claim for the seabed and foreshore: their historic case stands to set a powerful precedent for all coastal peoples.

The Nathan E. Stewart sank: but the Heiltsuk are rising.

Stunning footage combines with compelling storytelling to paint an urgent picture of a Nation poised to change the conversation about rights and reconciliation in this country.

Tuesday, March 19, 2019
11:30 AM to 1:00 PM
First People's House, University of Victoria BC
First People's House

Hosted by Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement

CIRCLE presents our Indigenous Speaker Series with Dr. Katrina Jagodinsky

Join us on March 19, 2019 from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm for lunch and a talk with Dr. Jagodinsky at the FPH Ceremonial Hall!

Everyone welcome, with lunch provided!

About Dr. Katrina Jagodinsky: Katrina Jagodinsky is the Susan J. Rosowski Associate Professor of History at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, where she teaches legal and western history and is also the inaugural Jack and Nancy Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar in History at Simon Fraser University this term. Her research highlights women’s challenges to their sexual and economic vulnerabilities in the long nineteenth century.

Her presentation will be focused on the ways in which Indigenous women navigated and challenged exploitive laws that made them vulnerable to child removal, land loss, and sexual assault between 1854-1946. Her goal in writing these histories and in continuing to talk about them in venues like UVic and elsewhere is to offer a clear portrait of the particular women who challenged the legally-sanctioned violence that made them and their family members vulnerable to abuse and dispossession. Many of these women were already known among their relatives as powerful figures vital to their own and their tribal histories, but to legal and regional historians of these places, their contributions had been overlooked and sometimes even denied.

Democracy & its Futures

6:30 PM to 9:00 PM
400 Herald Street, Victoria
Sunset Labs

Hosted by Stream of Consciousness & Sunset Labs & Canada-Europe Transatlantic Dialogue/ EUCAnet.org experts

While democratic ideals rest on the principle of free and equitable public dialogue and deliberation, contemporary Western democracies are experiencing deepening divisions and growing non-engagement in the public sphere amidst massive disinformation, in particular in social media.

This, as the world stands at the nexus of intensifying and intertwining crises of democratic, social, ecological, economic and earth systems. The panel discussion will address the conditions under which civic dialogue and democratic deliberation can be effective.

What forms should and could public debates take?

What role can academia and the media play in facilitating and reviving processes of public deliberation as a cornerstone of democratic practice?

This event addresses the issues of Democracy and its Futures through a multilogue between experts from academia, media, and civil society.

Hiding in Plain Sight:
Rare Plants with James Miskelly

7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
University of Victoria, MacLaurin Building, Victoria
University of Victoria, MacLaurin Bldg, Rm D-288 (NEW ROOM) in D-Wing

Hosted by Native Plant Study Group

The Victoria area is home to the highest diversity of vascular plants in BC, but this diversity isn’t always apparent in our natural areas. A lot of native plants are hiding in plain sight, while others are in decline or have already disappeared. What sorts of factors have resulted in such a high diversity of native plants, and what kinds of factors threaten this diversity? Are there species missing from our local parks and if so, how can we know which ones?

James Miskelly is a life-long naturalist who has worked in the ecology and conservation of Garry oak ecosystems for the last 20 years. He works mainly on rare plants, restoration, and grigs.

7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
616 Yates St., Victoria
Patagonia Victoria

Hosted by Patagonia Victoria & Balkan River Defence

The Balkan Peninsula cradles the last pristine rivers in Europe.

Now the hydro lobby is trying to destroy that by building 3,000 unnecessary dams. Rok Rozman, a pro kayaker turned activist, calls these rivers home and if anyone knows the destruction that can be brought on by dams, it's a kayaker. Rok chose to stand up for his home and the sport he loves by getting his fellow outdoor enthusiasts to join forces into what became the largest European direct action group for rivers called Balkan River Defence.

Join Rok and Patagonia Victoria for an evening presentation with storytelling and discussion on how outdoor enthusiasts should and can actively engage in the protection of our outdoor playgrounds.

Save Kings Park Community Meeting

Sunday, March 24, 2019
3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
1843 Kings Road, Victoria

Hosted by Save Kings Park - The BC Hydro Green Space on Bowker Creek

As many of you know, Saanich announced in January that it will be purchasing the BC Hydro Greenspace/Kings Park for $5.5M, closing in August 2019.

This is FANTASTIC news and an essential first step in protecting our greenspace as a park permanently.

However, while Saanich has committed $2.75M towards the purchase of the property, the remaining $2.75M funds will need to be fundraised through grants (applied for by both the municipality and by our community), private donors and contributions from other sources (ex. CRD, Province, etc).

Saanich has indicated that if funds are not able to be raised, part of the property will be sold for development to make up the difference.

*We firmly believe that working alongside Saanich, the CRD and the Province, together we will raise the needed funds and protect the entire greenspace permanently*.

And to ensure this happens, we need to get to work! :-)

We will be holding a community meeting in Kings Park on Sunday, March 24th from 3:00-4:00pm to share a more detailed update and to brainstorm fundraising ideas and capacities within our community.

Please join the meeting to help craft our community fundraising strategy. This will be an opportunity to share any and all ideas, resources, experience and capabilities. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join!
