McDonalds: another scandal

Amazing! Over 200,000 SumOfUs members just like you have told McDonald’s to sign up to the ‘Better Chicken Commitment’. This new set of standards would massively improve the welfare of the millions of chickens McDonald’s cooks up each year. Will you add your name too?

Yes -- I'll tell McDonald's to take needless suffering off the menu!

With Easter on the horizon and fluffy chicks on everyone’s brains, we’re taking this fight to the next level. But first, we need your help.

We’re about to put up scathing billboards across London exposing the suffering chickens endure for the McDonald’s menu. But before we do, we want to show McDonald’s just how many people are behind the message.

Together, our people power can force this fast-food Goliath to do better by its birds -- but only if enough SumOfUs members get on board. The more signatures we get, the greater the... impact. Are you in?

Yes -- I'll tell McDonald's to take needless suffering off the menu!

Thanks for all that you do,

Anna and the team at SumOfUs

Here's my original email:

McDonald’s chickens are bred to grow so fast their tiny bones and organs can't keep up.

100 other US food giants have pledged to treat farmed chickens with dignity -- but not McDonald’s. Tell McDonald’s to stop this needless cruelty and commit to better chicken welfare now!

McDonald’s chickens come from farms described as ‘hell on earth’.

Bred to grow too big, too fast they can barely walk from the weight of their own oversized bodies. Stranded on the floor, their legs sizzle from the fumes of each others’ waste.

Why? To make McNuggets and McChicken sandwiches.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. A leading group of animal charities has pulled together a set of ambitious standards to radically improve animal welfare at these farms. Starbucks, Unilever and even Burger King have already signed up… but not McDonald’s.

Here’s where you come in, A.

Tell McDonald’s: your chickens deserve lives worth living. Sign up to the Better Chicken Commitment now!

McDonald’s slick marketing campaigns can easily have us fooled into thinking its chickens enjoy stress-free lives roaming open fields. The company even released a whitewashed welfare ‘policy’ -- a ‘policy’ that not a single serious animal protection NGO has supported.

But here's the trick, A, public pressure has forced McDonald’s to make real changes in the past. Back in 2015, it switched to cage-free eggs in the US and Canada -- because people like you demanded it. Let’s use that same pressure to score an even bigger win for farmed chickens.

With a McDonald’s restaurant in almost every neighbourhood, the fast-food giant has no excuse to cut corners on animal welfare. It’s about to endure a PR nightmare, unless it steps up to plate and promises to improve chicken welfare like its competitors. Our expert partners at The Humane League have been fighting tooth and nail to get McDonald’s to make its pledge -- so we just need your name, A, to expose this cruel secret and push for real action today!

Tell McDonald’s: I'm not lovin' it until you pledge to treat chickens with compassion!

We know that when SumOfUs members like you fight for what’s right, together we can get McDonald’s to change its ways. After all, we’ve done it before.

Take plastic straws. Almost half a million members like you forced it to ditch them in UK restaurants last year. That’s a hell of a lot less plastic clogging up our oceans and killing the animals living in them. Members will be watching McDonald's straw plans very closely and working with disability activists to hold it accountable so that its plan ensures a safe and useable product that is accessible for disabled people.

And members like you forced McDonald's to commit to a deforestation-free palm oil policy. When we expose the ugly side of corporate giants -- like McDonald's -- they take action to protect their brand. And in doing so we score a massive victory for our planet, and the animals we share it with.
