Dear Friends and Supporters,

Yesterday, the BCCLA launched the first part of our Policing Indigenous Communities Initiative.

We’re partnering with leading Indigenous organizations across the province, to transform the laws and policies that perpetuate the over-representation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system.

The Policing Indigenous Communities Initiative is now live!

Indigenous people are significantly over-represented in the rates of incarceration across Canada.

We suspect that this over-representation can be traced back to unreasonable conditions of pre-trial release, where Indigenous people are caught in the “revolving door” of the criminal justice system for failure to comply with these conditions.

The first component of the Initiative, The Conditions Project, seeks to address this disproportionate impact of conditions on Indigenous people charged with offences, with a focus on people living in rural and remote communities.

Conditions are restrictions that are imposed on an accused person for the pre-trial period. Lasting from several weeks to months, they can include restrictions on where a person can go (also known as “red zones”), who they can contact, restrictions on drug and alcohol use, and curfews.

Learn more about The Conditions Project here.

We’re looking forward to sharing updates and developments with you as the project moves along. In the meantime, make sure to explore our website to learn more.

Our thanks to the Vancouver Foundation for their generous funding that is making this Initiative possible.

Sincerely,

Dylan Mazur
