HUMAN RIGHTS SUPPORT CENTRE WORKERS FIGHT BACK AGAINST PROVINCIAL CUTS

By Haseena Manek

“Our thing is that, as front line work is being cut, overall it affects the people of Ontario being served. I mean, what are they to do? If they’re being discriminated [against] in a human rights matter, what do they do? It’s not just impacting our front line people, it’s impacting the people of Ontario,” said Angela Huynh-Chew, Legal Case Coordinator at the Ontario Human Rights Legal Support Centre (HRLSC). “That’s why our slogan is Human Rights Matter because it should matter. It should matter to all Ontarians, to all people.”

Huynh-Chew is the bargaining team Chair and unit Steward with Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) Local 5118. She’s one of four OPSEU members and HRLSC employees who lead a campaign to protect funding to the Centre (along with Phyllis Kumi, Maureen Chow and Wil Szuhovszky) after the cut was announced. . Shelagh Pizey-Allen and Suhail Barot wrote that in partnering with developers to build transit – as this government plans to do – the location of stations could be dictated more by land values than the needs of commuters.

Their warning proved to be prescient – the project to connect the underserved and oft-forgotten Scarborough residents was absent from Ford’s $28.5 billion transit plan announced last week. Read more!

"KEEP GOING": TORY MPP TRIES TO DRIVE THROUGH PICKETS

By Tiffany Balducci, President, Durham Region Labour Council

It started off like many of our recent protests and pickets have: local groups of unions, parents of autistic children, students, community members, everyday people coming together to voice our concerns and opposition to the Ford agenda and government cuts. We found out Finance Minister Vic Fedeli would be speaking at the local Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce AGM, celebrating a budget for the corporate elite and we knew that it would be a chance to respond on behalf of the working class.

We quickly organized a picket through word-of-mouth, WhatsApp, email, and phone chats – keeping our organizing private as to keep our plans under wraps for the element of surprise. Read more!
