Tackling climate change together!

This week was terrible for supporters of climate action -- Jason Kenney, one of the biggest supporters of tar sands corporations, was elected into the top office in Alberta.

But amidst the bad news -- we wanted to know that, through your support, SumOfUs has engaged in several corporate campaigns that make a real difference in the fight against climate change.

Late in 2018, thousands of SumOfUs members in Canada told us that climate change should be SumOfUs' biggest priority in 2019. So we listened and, already this year, put the pressure on TD, TransCanada, Alton Gas, as well as worked on creating a solutions-oriented vision -- the Green New Deal.

Here's an inside look at what happens after you signed petitions and donated to these campaigns.

You’re pressuring banks to pull the plug on fossil fuel funding.

Here's a picture of our action outside of TD's investors meeting

In March, SumOfUs co-sponsored a bomb-shell, international report on which banks are financing fossil fuel expansion and found that 3 Canadian Banks were in the top 10. In particular, RBC, TD and Scotiabank have poured hundreds of billions of dollars into expanding and maintaining fossil fuel projects across the globe.

Because of that, almost 20,000 members like you signed a petition calling on these three banks to clean up their acts and stop funding fossil fuel projects.

Two weeks ago, I had the honour to deliver your signatures to the CEO of TD at the annual investors meeting, while hundreds of SumOfUs members tweeted strong messages that TD must get in line with a stronger climate commitment.

And we had a real impact -- top executives at TD have requested a meeting to discuss our concerns.

Check out this video of the rally outside the petition delivery -- and share it if you like it.

You supported Indigenous resistance to massive natural gas projects from Coast to Coast

Unist'ot'en Camp resistance signs

We acted in solidarity with the Wetsu’wet’en people to stop Coastal Gas Link from starting work on a pipeline that would destroy critical Indigenous community initiatives, like Unist’ot’en Camp, and have devastating effects on our climate.

Over 13,000 members like you sent emails to key decision makers and kept the pressure on to drop the injunction. SumOfUs members also donated $10,000 CAD to support their legal case. Coastal Gas Link has issued a stop work order for non-compliance of conditions and destruction of Indigenous traplines.

You also supported the Mi’kmaq people in their fight against another natural gas corporation, Alton Gas, with plans to dump 3,000 tonnes a day of salt into an important river, just to store natural gas so it can make more profits. Over 17,000 SumOfUs members signed the petition calling on the Federal government to heed environmental and Treaty law. The fight continues and we will support the Mi'kmaq to hold oil companies to account for their impacts on climate and Indigenous rights.

You’re calling for a bold climate plan in a Green New Deal for Canada.

The Pact for a Green New Deal

When we asked you if you wanted SumOfUs to join a powerful coalition of diverse organizations across Canada calling on a Green New Deal in Canada, over 90% of you sounded a resounding YES! And on Wednesday, a new poll released that the majority of Canadians also support a Green New Deal.

Well, we heeded your call to action and are working on the launch of the Pact for a Green New Deal in Canada, happening in the next few weeks.

We’re working with diverse groups from across the land to create something that will benefit all people living on this land -- not just an elite few -- while tackling the greatest crisis of our time -- climate change.

Stay tuned for how you can get involved in this bold, new plan early next month.

The need for climate action is clear -- a leaked report last week found Canada warming at twice the global rate. And it's clear that corporations are most responsible for it.

You given us the mandate to focus on climate change in Canada by time and time again identifying it as priority for SumOfUs.

We’ve only been able to do such great work because of your support. We’re just a tiny team of two in Canada but we lift way above our weight. We want to keep making real changes for climate action but we can't do it without your support.

Yes, I will chip in CA$93 to help us keep doing amazing climate work in Canada?

Thanks for all that you do,
Amelia, Angus and the team at SumOfUs
