Green New Deal

Take the pledge for a Green New Deal today

The Green New Deal is a visionary plan to move us off the corporate-dominated fossil economy and stop the biggest threat our planet has faced: climate change.

A,

“We have 12 years to combat climate change before it's too late.” -- United Nations IPCC report.

“Canada is warming at twice the global rate” -- Canada's Changing Climate Report

It seems that every week, there’s another groundbreaking report... highlighting the need for comprehensive action plan to address climate change. With Big Oil companies like Exxon, BP and Shell in the top 20 biggest carbon emitters on Earth we know we need to stop using fossil fuels now.

Not only that but more and more corporations are trampling Indigenous rights to force through their agendas, while pocketing billions and leaving many suffer from economic hardship.

Luckily, we have a solution to all these converging crises. SumOfUs is part of a coalition of groups in Canada have been organizing to develop a Green New Deal for Canada -- a solutions-oriented plan to move us off the corporate-dominated fossil economy, prevent catastrophic climate change, honour Indigenous rights while ensuring good jobs for all.

Over 90% of SumOfUs members in Canada voted for SumOfUs to join the Green New Deal coalition last month. And since then, we’ve developed a bold plan to make the Green New Deal a reality in Canada -- and it starts with today with your pledge.

The Green New Deal is a visionary plan that puts Indigenous reconciliation at the forefront. It will transform our current economy focused on corporate profits for the 1% to a future where we can eliminate poverty and create millions of jobs while tackling the biggest threat of our time: climate change.

Together, we can build a "movement of movements" to tackle the multiple crises we face. The reality is these crises -- climate change, the continued denial of justice for Indigenous peoples, racism and the rise of the far-right, inequality, global housing instability, exploitation of migrant workers -- all serve to divide ordinary people like us so that billionaires can make their profits.

The momentum for the Green New Deal continues to build. Last month, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released a beautiful video describing the Green New Deal, and it went viral with over a million views in one week. And a new poll released last week says that the majority of Canadians support a Green New Deal.

But the Green New Deal needs all hands on deck. And it starts with your pledge today.

To face down our challenges as we stand at the intersection of all these crises requires a transformative policy platform that stretches across industries, walks of life, beliefs, and geography. We need a Green New Deal.

Late in 2018, thousands of SumOfUs members in Canada told us that climate change should be SumOfUs' biggest priority in 2019. So we listened and, already this year, put the pressure on TD, TransCanada, and Alton Gas. But we know that in addition to calling on corporations to address climate change, we all need to be working on solutions-oriented vision.

Take the pledge

Thanks for all that you do,
Amelia, Angus and the team at SumOfUs
