As the temperatures rise so will we

I have something that I want to share with you. It’s a photo of an elementary school near my house. I took is last Thursday, around noon, when smoke from wildfires in Northern Alberta – the same ones that have forced thousands of people from their homes and lands – transformed the sky into an apocalyptic orange haze.

This is not normal. Or, at least it shouldn’t be. But, as climate change deepens, it’s as if we’re facing a fifth season in this country - wildfire season.

Despite this, our politicians continue to act like business as usual is good enough. But we deserve better. That is... why this Fall during the 2019 federal elections, we need a leaders’ debate on the climate crisis and the only real solution: Canada’s Green New Deal.

Last week wasn’t the first time that an orange sky like this has hung over Edmonton. Since moving here three years ago, I’ve seen the impacts of wildfires each and every summer. Last summer, I watched a young boy on a tricycle ride up past the same school where this photo was taken in the middle of August. He squinted up and sniffed at a similar orange sky, his Ninja Turtle’s helmet tilted back, and I imagined him pedaling home to ask his parents why the sky was such a strange hue.

It reminded me of a conversation I had the summer before when a daycare director from Fort McMurray told me how children in their care were scared of the smoky skies that BC wildfires brought to their town. It was a stark reminder of the devastating fires that had burned through their community in 2016.1 We are witnessing climate change taking homes, lives, and livelihoods across our country.

Now more than ever, we need politicians to make it clear where they stand on tackling the climate crisis and implementing an ambitious plan like a Green New Deal. Add your name to call for a federal leaders’ debate on climate change this fall.

As the temperatures continue to rise into the summer, I hope you will rise with me.

With resolve,
