Latin America Partner Visits
Last march, CoDev worked with Canadian partners The BC Teachers' Federation (BCTF) and the Surrey Teachers' Association (STA), to bring Latin American teacher partners on speaking tours to BC.

CoDev education program Director Wendy Santizo, supported the STA in organizing the visit of Mercedes Martinez, President of the Puerto Rican Teachers' Front (FMPR). At the STA's Cross-Border Social Justice Conference held in May, Martinez explained how "disaster capitalism" was playing out in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria which devastated the island in September, 2017. Puerto Rican authorities have taken advantage of the destruction to privatize the education system. Public schools damaged in the storm remain shuttered, while the government funnels subsidies to privately-run "charter" schools.

Mercedes Martinez

Shortly after Mercedes' visit, CoDev accompanied Mexican teacher Lucia Morales from the Totlahtol Yoltok Teachers' Collective, whom the BCTF had invited to speak at their Annual General Meeting in Victoria. Morales visited Sto:lo territory along the Fraser River where she met with educators and elders. She also met with the BCTF's Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee, and spoke at public events in Vancouver and Victoria. Morales described the hope and the challenges of indigenous teachers in Mexico, following the inauguration of centre-left President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador. She described the efforts of Totlahtol to develop indigenous education consistent with the cosmovision of the Nahuatl peoples of the Montañas Altas region of Veracruz, where the collective works.

Lucia Morales

In Mid-May, CoDev and the BCTF hosted a visit from Maria de la Luz Arriaga. Mexican economist and coordinator of the Tri-National Coalition to Defend Public Education. Mariluz provided a fascinating presentation at the BCTF's Conference on the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Education 2030 plan, which seeks to "harmonize" the education systems of OECD countries and other states that participate in the Organization's "PISA" standardized exams. Her presentation along with others from international researchers, helped prepare the BCTF for their participation in a conference hosted later that week by the BC Education Ministry and the OECD.

CoDev also accompanied Mariluz to an interview with the America Latina al Dia on Coop Radio (100.5 FM). To listen to the interview, follow this link and find the June 1 broadcasts. As the shows are recorded in one-hour blocks, you'll need to listen to the last 15 minutes of the first hour and the rest of the interview in the second hour. Enjoy!
