HUGE win!

The CPP divested our pensions from brutal US private prison corporations

A,

We have some AMAZING news for you! We just found out that the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) has completely divested from CoreCivic and GEO Group -- the two biggest private prison companies in the US!

CoreCivic and GEO Group are responsible for housing 60% of the migrants who are detained in horrible conditions in private prisons in the US. Stories of brutal and inhuman treatment of children in these prisons have been spreading across the news like wildfire.

Together with our partners at Leadnow, we launched a massive campaign after The Guardian's story about CPP decision to increase its funding in private prisons in October. Within a month, our joint petition had more than 55,000 signatures and hundreds of you stormed CPP public meetings. And we know you made a difference -- we were quoted in many publications around the world, including The Guardian who quoted us as it broke the news of CPP's divestment.

This win was only possible because of members like you! Together, we showed amazing might of people-power to transform the practices of huge investment funds.

When we first heard about Canadians’ pensions being invested in child prisons, SumOfUs members acted fast. Almost 15,000 members like you signed a petition calling for divestment.

Not only that, SumOfUs members showed up to the CPPIB’s public meetings across the country to hold executives’ feet to the fire. From Charlottetown to Vancouver SumOfUs members pushed hard.

More than 100 SumOfUs and Leadnow member came to Toronto action.

We kept these shady investments in the news and your campaign was highlighted in The Guardian, The Huffington Post and The Star. And after sustained pressure at four straight meetings, thousands of you sent emails to the top executives calling for divestment.

And it worked. Quietly, the CPPIB removed these heinous private prison corporations from its portfolio -- and now our pensions are no longer funding child imprisonment, family separation and Trump’s brutal anti-immigration policies.

Your huge win was highlighted in the Guardian again and the whole world now knows of the amazing power of SumOfUs members.

This was a HUGE people powered win and couldn’t have been possible without the support of members like you. And though we won this, we are setting our sites even higher -- we want to prevent the CPP from ever investing in unethical corporations like CoreCivic and GEO Group again.

Can you chip in CA$92 today to continue our work on cleaning up our pension investments?

Thanks for all that you do,
Amelia, Angus and the team at SumOfUs
