Want a better cell phone deal?

OpenMedia r1

I just wanted to follow up on Marie’s email from last week and check if you’ve had a chance to fill out the survey for the CRTC’s wireless market review?

This review is a great opportunity to introduce more choice and affordability... into Canada's cell phone market. To ensure the CRTC makes the necessary changes, we need them to hear about your experience dealing with our broken cell phone market.

All the responses to this survey will be handed over to the CRTC and will inform our official report to the commission in October.

Make sure your voice is heard by filling out the survey!

Thanks for all that you do,

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is reviewing our wireless market and is considering allowing new providers known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) to compete with the Big Three.1

This means that our best chance to open up Canada’s market to more choice of cell phone providers and affordable prices may be on the horizon. But in order to get the CRTC to make a meaningful change, we must show that our cell phone prices remain ridiculously high and our market largely uncompetitive.

We’ve put together a quick survey to collect information from cell phone customers from all walks all life across Canada to do just that.

Will you take five minutes to share your personal experience with your cell phone provider? We’ll include your story as part of OpenMedia’s submission to the CRTC in October.

The more stories we collect, the stronger our case will be to show the CRTC that no matter what Big Telecom says, Canada’s cell phone market is still broken and people like you and I are struggling to keep up with our monthly bills.

The only reason why we keep paying some of the highest cell phone bills in the world is simple — the stronghold the Big Three have over our wireless market. Bell, Telus and Rogers alone control ~92% of the market share.2

Is your monthly cell phone bill hurting your wallet? Do you wish you could get more bang for your buck when it comes to your cell phone plan? Have you ever had an unpleasant experience with your provider, only to find out you didn’t really have much choice but to stick with the same one? If the answer to any of these is yes, we want to hear from you.

Your experiences are very valuable. By submitting them to the CRTC by the thousands, they won’t be able to ignore the problem any longer. We need more choice and lower prices!

P.S. Just last week, the CRTC released a landmark decision that will mean more competition and cheaper home Internet.3 This consultation has the potential to do the same for mobile, by transforming the wireless market and allowing small, independent cell phone providers to compete with the Big Three, driving down prices and increasing choice for customers. Please share this survey widely!
