Paov,
We've been collecting your stories about how the Big Three have been abusing their customers. One person had calls blocked while they were unemployed, preventing them from getting job interviews. Another got a $900 phone bill with no warning after their niece used a FaceTime-style video chat app.
But just collecting these stories isn't enough to convince Parliament to take action to allow MVNOs to bring us better service. That's why we're... planning to run ads in the Ottawa Citizen—so that our MPs can't ignore them.
Because Bell, Rogers, and Telus have such a strong control over the Internet market, Canadians pay some of the highest prices in the world for awful cell plans.
So when we asked for your horror stories, we knew we'd get a big response. Here are just a sample of comments that we've gotten in just the past few days:
"[One of the Big Three] bought out our local provider. Promised that the loss of competition would not push up prices. Rates have [risen] 20% in just a couple of years." --Josh B. "I have been saddled with [my company] for years because it is all we can intermittently get. To call customer (non) service I have been put on hold for four hours numerous times, then the problem I had was not solved! I also have to get slow satellite internet for over $100 a month because there is nothing else." --James F. "I work for a large company that provides a work phone through [one of the Big Three]. On it I have practically unlimited data, texting, local/long distance/international calling, caller ID and voicemail and my company only pays $58 per month. Regular people in Canada are getting hosed." --Joe R.We can have low-cost, reliable service in Canada through Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), which would break up the Big Three's monopoly. But so far, the Big Three have successfully lobbied to keep MVNOs out of the market.
With your help, we can launch a major ad campaign, plastering these horror stories where decision-makers can't miss them.
Will you chip in to call out the Big Three and bring in MVNOs and lower prices to Canada's cell phone market?
