ALERT: Bell's new low

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

Big Telecom just asked Prime Minister Trudeau to get rid of new rules that lower the cost of Internet access for people in Canada.1

This is a direct attack on a recent decision from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), which cut the rates that Big Telecom can charge smaller providers for wholesale access to its network. This decision was a major step forwards in bringing Canada the lower-cost, high-speed Internet we need... – and Big Telecom is doing everything in its power to stop it.2

OpenMedia is launching an emergency campaign to fight Big Telecom's attempt to overrule the CRTC's decision and hike prices again. Will you rush a donation today?

Here's the deal: The CRTC regulates the prices at which Big Telecom can sell network access to smaller companies. For years, Big Telecom has been overcharging smaller providers for access, which is part of the reason why we keep paying some of the highest prices in the world for our Internet.3 Without meaningful competition, rates have remained sky-high.

But with our supporters, OpenMedia has been pressuring the CRTC to lower the rates in order to level the playing field for smaller providers to compete. In August, the CRTC finally listened to the people and set fair rates, forcing Big Telecom to lower their wholesale prices and pay back what they had been overcharging.4

As a result, a handful of smaller companies, like Teksavvy, Distributel, Oricom and Start.ca, immediately passed those savings on to the customers and reaffirmed their commitment to investing in underserved rural areas.5

But Big Telecom isn’t going down without a fight. They immediately appealed the decision in federal court, and now they've decided to take it one step further – Bell is asking the new federal cabinet to overturn the CRTC's low rate mandate.

This is an insult to everyone who has worked so hard to bring affordable high-speed Internet to Canada, especially to our most vulnerable populations.

We need to raise a massive uproar to let cabinet know that they can’t give in to this kind of bullying from Big Telecom. Affordable Internet is at stake, and we're going to fight with everything we've got.

Will you rush an emergency donation to OpenMedia to help stop Big Telecom from taking away our low-cost, high-speed Internet?

For our Internet,
Marie, and the whole team at OpenMedia
