Dear friends and supporters,
The BC government created the Community Safety Act in 2013, but it has never taken effect. Now, however, there is a real danger of it being implemented.
The BC government recently reintroduced the Act by passing the Community Safety Amendment Act (Bill 13) which received Royal Assent on October 31st.
The BCCLA is staunchly opposed to this legislation—we believe that it is unjust and will put people’s housing security at risk, especially vulnerable communities, that are often over-policed and under-protected.
Read my blog on the five reasons why the Community Safety Act should never come to life in BC.If brought into effect, this law will allow individuals to report their neighbours to the government if they suspect certain activities are taking place on a property.
This will trigger a process that will not only circumvent laws with better procedural safeguards, but can result in a court order forcing individuals and families to vacate their homes.
The Act threatens the well-being of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people in our communities, and in the context of growing racial tensions, it will open up an avenue for targeted harassment driven by racism and other forms of prejudice.
Read my blog here.In addition to these numerous issues, we suspect that this law will be expensive to administer—so we recently filed a Freedom of Information request to find out projected costs of the Act. Stay tuned as we continue to fight the implementation of this unjust law!
Sincerely,
Meghan McDermott
