DOUBLE your donation to save the Internet!

Paov,

Our digital rights are in serious danger.

Bell is fighting the CRTC's wholesale rates, which brought cheap, fast Internet to Canada. The new government has refused to commit to privacy laws that would protect us from surveillance. And invasive, faulty facial-recognition technology is gaining steam online and in the real world.

This #GivingTuesday, we've set a... goal of raising $10,000 to defend the Internet, and a generous donor, VoIP company Iristel, has agreed to match the first $3,000 in donations!

Will you chip in to help stop attacks on our Internet? All donations up to $3,000 will be MATCHED 100% .

In 2019, we made great strides in gaining reliable, affordable Internet in Canada, convincing the CRTC to mandate low wholesale rates for the big telecom companies, opening the door for smaller companies to offer reliable plans that were affordable. This was a game-changer for the digital divide between rural and urban Canadians.

And during the election, we got every major party to commit to making affordable Internet and cell service a priority in the new government.

But Bell, the giant telecom corporation, decided to fight dirty.

First, Bell announced it was pulling back on its commitment to invest in rural broadband infrastructure, dropping more than 200,000 homes from its plan.1 Then the corporation challenged the CRTC's rates and sued in federal court.

If we're going to fight for our principles of an easily accessible, open Internet, we need to fight on many fronts. Here are some of the campaigns we're working on for 2020:

  • We've launched an emergency campaign to stop Parliament from caving to Bell and reversing the CRTC's low wholesale rates.
  • We're sounding the alarm about the dangers of facial-recognition software, and we're supporting legislation to ban the use of the technology.
  • We're helping provincial governments pass Right to Repair legislation so we can fix our own devices and stop cell phones and tablets from piling up in landfills.

2020 is going to be a huge year for the Internet. We need to make sure that Internet freedom and our right to privacy of our own data are spotlight issues, and we can't make that happen without your help.

That's why we're asking, on this Giving Tuesday, will you donate to help protect the free and open Internet? Iristel will DOUBLE every donation up to $3,000.
