Dear friends and supporters,

Last week, we shared some of our ambitious goals for 2020 with you. We are excited to tell you that more than 638 people contributed to help us reach our goal of 1,000 donors by the end of December. Now, a donor has come forward to match up to $5,000 raised this week so your contribution will go twice as far!

Take advantage of matching funds and help us reach our goal of 1,000 donors we need in the month of December.

Your support ensures we can continue to defend civil liberties across Canada, from fighting to end prolonged solitary confinement to protecting freedom of expression.

Journalists, activists, land defenders, and community groups should not live in fear of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) – costly legal action typically initiated by large corporations to silence the voices of those with few resources to fight back. People should be free to exercise their freedom of expression and stand up for their communities without threat of a lawsuit which could take tens of thousands of dollars (and years of their lives) to fight.

Fortunately, after decades of advocacy, the BC Legislature unanimously passed anti-SLAPP legislation this year! The BCCLA then took the fight against SLAPPs to the Supreme Court of Canada in November 2019 to defend the Ontario counterpart to BC’s law.

Unfortunately, 10 provinces and territories still do not have protections to stop big money from attempting to silence community members. Even worse, thanks to “Forum shopping,” corporate bullies can choose to file lawsuits in jurisdictions lacking these crucial protections to target people even if they live in provinces with anti-SLAPP legislation.

We cannot stop now. If one province remains unprotected, we all are at risk.

Join our movement for change and donate today!

Thank you for your tireless support and dedication.

Sincerely,

Mark Hosak
Director of Community Engagement
