Bayer, Nestlé, Green New Deal

A,

Late last year, we surveyed SumOfUs members on how you want us to curb corporate power in Canada in 2020. And we were overwhelmed by the results -- 3,400 of you took the survey. The results will help us plan our work in 2020 and beyond.

Two major themes emerged from the survey:

  • SumOfUs should continue to fight back against corporations like Nestlé and Bayer
  • Canada needs a Green New Deal

Water and bees VS. Nestlé and Bayer

We asked SumOfUs members what we should prioritize in our work to curb corporate power and 2 areas stood out:

  • 74% of you want us to prevent food and beverage companies like Nestlé from draining our water resources to bottle for profit.
  • 71% of you want us to ban bee-killing pesticides produced from agri-giants like Bayer-Monsanto.

Other major themes were: fighting fossil fuel pipelines such as TransMountain pipeline, the plastics crisis from food giants like Coca-Cola, toxic glyphosate in Monsanto’s RoundUp, pressuring big banks like TD on climate change.

Here are comments that two SumOfUs members had:

“There are so many it would be hard to pick just one. I think that there should be limits placed on how big any companies or corporations can get so... their ability to abuse their power is limited...”

“I am passionate about GMOs, pesticides and fertilizers not being in our food supply. I am also passionate about protecting our drinking water. You're already working on these issues, so keep it up.”

The Federal Election, Corporate Power, and the Green New Deal

We sent the survey after the Federal election and here is how you felt about the elections:

  • Very satisfied - 4%
  • Satisfied - 35%
  • Neutral - 20%
  • Unsatisfied - 29%
  • Very unsatisfied - 12%

Though the results were mixed on how you felt -- nearly 100% of the 3400+ members that answered our poll believed that it is important or very important to continue keeping corporate power in check and holding the government accountable, both in Canada and the rest of the world.

The vast majority of people (93%) want SumOfUs to continue to push the government for a Green New Deal -- a comprehensive plan to shift our economy off fossil fuels and create green jobs.

You’ve given us a big line-up of amazing campaigns to work on in 2020 and we want to deliver -- but we can’t do that without sustained support. Corporations like Nestlé, Bayer and Exxon have billions of dollars. Here at SumOfUs we know we have something more powerful -- people power from people like you chipping in a little every month.

Can you chip in a special monthly donation to keep our critical work on keeping corporate power in check going?

SumOfUs would like to take this opportunity to thank you as well for all that you do and encourage you to continue keeping corporate power in check in 2020.

Thanks for all that you do,
Luca, Amelia, Angus, and the team at SumOfUs
