... End Indefinite Solitary Confinement

Dear friends and supporters,

Today the Supreme Court of Canada announced that it will hear our case about the constitutionality of solitary confinement.

Together with the John Howard Society Canada, we are heading to the country’s top court to argue that prolonged, indefinite solitary confinement must be abolished in Canada.

Read our press release here.

Last fall, the federal government attempted to overturn our historic BC Court of Appeal judgment that found prolonged, indefinite solitary confinement unconstitutional. We cross-appealed, arguing the Court did not go far enough to protect the rights of prisoners.

Now, the Supreme Court of Canada has chosen to hear both the appeal and cross-appeal.

Long-term solitary confinement has been condemned the world over as a form of torture. Prisoners are isolated for up to 22 hours a day, sometimes for months or years at a time, causing them severe mental, physical, and spiritual harm.

It’s time to end this broken and destructive system, which continues to harm so many imprisoned people, leaving them to struggle to rebuild their lives.

Thank you for your support. Taking our fight to the Supreme Court is only possible because our supporters stand with us and imprisoned people across the country.

Sincerely,
Grace Pastine
Litigation Director
