Dear PAOV,

This past month, communities from across Canada and the world were outraged by the violation of Wet’suwet’en rights for the sake of Coastal GasLink’s fracked gas pipeline. We are moved and inspired by the rise in solidarity actions to demonstrate that no one is backing down in their commitments to support Wet’suwet’en land protectors.

The Wet’suwet’en aren’t backing down either. The Hereditary Chiefs of all Wet’suwet’en clans, acting in unity, have launched legal actions to defend their rights and title from unwanted industrial activity, and to hold the governments of Canada accountable to climate commitments.

We want to keep the momentum going for Wet’suwet’en. RAVEN is launching a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign to fund these strategic - and potentially game-changing - legal challenges. Our Allies Toolkit is full of ideas and resources to help you organize in your community to raise funds for RAVEN’s two Wet’suwet’en-led legal challenges.

Last week, passionate Anishinaabe and Mohawk allies kicked off We are the Stronghold-- an ongoing ‘viral’ fundraiser to support RAVEN's legal defence fund for the Wet'suwet'en. With sold-out shows in Toronto and Yellowknife, and incredible artists including Cris Derksen, Serena Ryder, Digging Roots and Sarain Fox, these community-led actions in support of Wet’suwet’en raised $25k this week. We are in awe of the dedication and lightning-responsiveness of this powerful group of artists who stood up for justice at this critical time.

Through music, celebration and online solidarity, We are the Stronghold is one powerful way of uniting communities across the nation to help the Wet’suwet’en fully fund their legal challenges. With events springing up across the country, from Montreal to Halifax to Smithers, BC, we’re challenging YOU to think of skookum ways to rally folks in a positive, uplifting way. Sign up here to organize an event, join the #wearethestronghold online fundraising team, or make a donation right now. No matter what you do, from a bake sale to a benefit concert, we’re here to support you!

This is about providing access to justice so Wet’suwet’en leadership can affirm Indigenous legal frameworks that are — easily — as much a part of the fabric of this land as European parliamentary traditions.

Will you support the Wet’suwet’en and organize in your community?

A legal precedent is a stronghold. A circle of allies is a stronghold. We have an opportunity for the most ancient laws of this land to help shape our common future.

Together, we are the stronghold. Are you in?

In Solidarity,

Susan, Andrea, Ana and the RAVEN Team
