Urgent - Coronavirus in Italy

A,

"The war has literally exploded and the battles are uninterrupted day and night."

That’s the desperate plea from a doctor on the frontline of Italy’s coronavirus outbreak. Nurses are exhausted, scrambling for ventilators and critical supplies in the hope of halting this pandemic.

Meanwhile, corporations look at this humanitarian crisis with dollar signs in their eyes.

From refusing to pay sick leave to hiking up prices on vital defences -- corporations have run wild. And we’re paying the price.

The virus will advance without mercy if we let corporations get away with trying to make a quick buck out of it. So right now, you and I urgently need to fight for free and accessible testing, treatment, and vaccines for everyone.

Please, can you donate to help fight against coronavirus?

A,

Nurses and doctors in Italy are forced to decide who will live and who will die. Ventilators have become like gold -- and there simply aren’t enough for everyone who needs one.

This worst-case scenario could happen everywhere -- unless we slow the spread of the disease.

The virus will advance without mercy if we let corporations get away with trying to make a quick buck out of this crisis. From refusing to pay sick leave to putting up prices on critical supplies -- corporations have run wild. And we are paying the price.

A, can you chip in CA$97 so we can go to battle for free testing and treatment, sick leave for gig and part-time workers, and an end to price gouging on critical supplies?

Tens of thousands of SumOfUs members have come together to demand that gig workers get paid sick leave -- and your pressure is working: Uber, Lyft, Hermes, and now Amazon have announced they’re offering sick pay to drivers who’ve been diagnosed with coronavirus or placed into quarantine.

But too many companies and restaurants are still forcing employees to make tough choices: come to work when you’re sick or get fired.

We know what we need to do:

  • Push governments to offer free testing even for uninsured people, and demand pharmaceutical companies develop free vaccines and treatment;
  • Target gig-economy employers to ensure sick leave and paid time off for all;
  • Stopping price-gouging for critical supplies like hand sanitizer and medical masks on websites like eBay and Amazon.

A new virus like this tests our humanity like nothing else. In these moments of crisis we need to come together and take care of the most vulnerable.

Nobody should have to choose between their basic costs of living and the health of their family or community. We’re going to work so that no one has to. If you chip in today, we’ll get straight to it.
