Now is the time for a Green New Deal,
Not another bailout for capital

"The Disease is Capitalism"

Of a sudden, the profound dysfunction of our social, political, and economic system is laid bare for all to see. Noam Chomsky has called it a "colossal market failure."

"Exactly a month after Donald Trump tweeted that the US had the coronavirus outbreak 'very much under control,' the World Health Organization delivered a stark and jarring reality check: America faces being the center of a pandemic that has paralysed much of the world." (The Guardian, March 24, 2020)

But what is the cure if a worldwide ecosocialist revolution is not imminent? It's time for us to share our best ideas and act on them.

Yesterday, I was honking a horn in a caravan demonstration to demand the immediate release of those imprisoned in concentration camps for immigrants. We wound our way through the streets of San Francisco, past the local headquarters of ICE, past City Hall, and lingered outside Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office for 15 minutes with bullhorns blazing. Our cars were festooned with messages of compassion and demands that Governor Newsom act now to prevent a disaster in California's ICE camps. People flashed v-signs and smiles all along our route.

The old Black Panther slogan is true: "The spirit of the people is greater than the man's technology." We can and must find ways to take to the streets in the midst of the pandemic because sure as shooting the capitalist class and the Right are ready to exploit the crisis brought on by COVID-19.

The coronavirus class war has already started. For some of the most trenchant analysis of the situation, you can change the channel from MSNBC to video commentary by Noam Chomsky, Mike Davis, Naomi Klein, Keeanga-Yamhatta Taylor, and Astra Taylor.

System Change Not Climate Change is publishing articles that look at the COVID-19 emergency in the context of the larger planetary emergency of climate change and the structural crisis of capitalism. We aim to publish original pieces by ecosocialists as well as republish thought-provoking articles of interest to ecosocialists.

Below you will links to a number of our recent articles including Beyond Cabin Fever: The Left Confronts COVID-19, an article I wrote to share news of some of the ways the Left is responding to the pandemic.

Finally, SCNCC is a 100% volunteer effort. If you want to contribute to our website with writing or suggestions, and especially if you are interested in participating in our editorial process, click here and let us know.

In solidarity,
