May The 4th Be With You: Summit Raises Landmark €7.4 Billion To Tackle COVID-19

Dear Paov,

On Monday May 4, something incredible happened. Leaders from across the world joined forces and showed what’s possible when we work together by raising an amazing €7.4 billion to protect everyone against COVID-19.

“The partners are many, the goal is one: to defeat this virus.” Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

Global Citizens — including within Canada — have taken over 500,000 actions to help look out for everyone during this pandemic and this week, your voices were heard.

The pledges are going to support organizations at the forefront of the fight including CEPI, Gavi, and the World Health Organization to ensure diagnostics, treatments and vaccines are developed and reach everyone in need.

“COVID-19 is a global challenge that requires a global solution — and everyone must do their part.” Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada.

Over 40 countries took part in the digital summit. And in a historic commitment, Norway pledged $1 billion towards Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Other states who stepped up to show support included Austria, Denmark and Ireland, and the Netherlands — who pledged €192 million to the Global Response.

“More will be needed — today is only the start of a global pledging marathon.” Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

Paov, your voice has helped us get this far, but we are still on a mission to make sure that a vaccine is developed faster than ever before and everyone receives the protection they deserve. In the next few weeks we’ll be joining forces with the EU to bridge that final gap.

Take a read of everything that happened on Monday and get ready to support the next incredible leg of this campaign. We can’t do it without you.
