Dear Paov,
The smoke from the west coast wildfires has travelled through 6 Canadian provinces. It’s even reached Toronto, where I live, and Ottawa, where Trudeau’s cabinet just finished their strategy retreat.1
We can only hope that seeing the climate crisis on their front porch will be enough to push federal leaders into prioritizing bold climate action. But we’ve only seen reports that they’re pushing climate to the back burner and shelving plans for a green recovery.2
Let’s turn up the pressure. Call Finance Minister Freeland this week and demand that she make climate action a priority in the federal budget.
We have less than a week until the Trudeau government unveils their pandemic recovery plans in the Speech from the Throne on September 23rd. This will be their chance to win the confidence of the house and the support that they need to govern.
This is a rare opportunity for the government to chart a new course that meaningfully tackles the most important crises of our time while supporting struggling people across the country. It’s a chance to stop sinking tens of billions of... dollars into the climate-wrecking Trans Mountain pipeline and invest in meaningful action on tackling the climate emergency and supporting communities through the worst economic crisis in our lifetime.
Let’s make sure Finance Minister Freeland makes the right decision. Join hundreds of people across the country to flood Freeland’s phone lines with a demand that she prioritize climate action.
Despite the intensity of the climate crisis, I remain hopeful knowing that solutions to the crisis are within our fingertips. I was so moved to hear about the stories of community-led climate solutions during this Monday’s e-rally.3
It’s clear that the action we need to build back better from this state of emergency is possible. We just need to push politicians to build the political courage to deliver on the kind of ambition that this crisis demands.
Onwards,
Amara
PS — If you’re wondering what a roadmap to building back better looks like, my friend Seth Klein just wrote a book called “A Good War: Mobilizing for the Climate Emergency.” And I will be on the panel for his upcoming digital book launch event this upcoming Monday on September 21st. You can sign up to join in here. Or check out Seth’s website to learn more about the book itself and other upcoming launch events.
